In 19th-century South Africa, a baboon named Jack reportedly became a railway signalman, helping a disabled railway worker operate signals and manage track switches.

Jack’s story began with James “Jumper” Wide, a railway worker who lost both legs in an accident. After acquiring Jack in the early 1880s, Wide trained the baboon to assist with everyday tasks before teaching him to respond to train whistles and operate railway signal levers.

The unusual arrangement eventually attracted the attention of railway authorities, who reportedly tested Jack’s abilities. Historical accounts describe him successfully responding to signals during the assessment, leading to his employment being officially recognised.

Jack is said to have worked at Uitenhage station in the Cape Colony, now part of South Africa’s Eastern Cape, for approximately nine years. Accounts also describe him receiving an employment number and provisions as part of his railway service.

One of the most remarkable details is the claim that Jack never made a mistake that caused a railway accident. While this detail appears in historical retellings, it should not be interpreted as proof that every aspect of his work was independently documented.

Jack died in 1890, reportedly from tuberculosis. His story remains a fascinating historical account of animal intelligence, human ingenuity and an unusual partnership that became part of South African railway history.
