The photograph clearly illustrates how the active mine adjacent to the creek that feeds the Douglas Dam, opposite the Ermelo Golf Course, significantly impacts the surrounding catchment area. This operation can contribute to the phenomenon of acid mine drainage, leading to the release of highly acidic water containing heavy metals such as lead, copper, and arsenic. Consequently, the runoff then alters the pH levels of the stream and ultimately the Douglas Dam, potentially reducing the pH to levels comparable to vinegar.

A fundamental question arises: how can the ANC government, in conjunction with the Msukaligwa Regional Government and Municipality, permit such detrimental practices? One must also consider whether certain individuals within the government are benefiting from this situation. If not, it raises the question of how such conditions are tolerated.

Moreover, this mine is not the only one adversely affecting the primary waterway feeding the Douglas Dam. A quick search on Google Maps reveals the extensive impact of mining activities in this area.

It is profoundly disheartening to witness the environmental devastation caused by mining activities. In this instance, the secondary catchment area of the Douglas Dam, Ermelo, Mpumalanga has been severely impacted. The Msukaligwa Municipality must be held accountable for this situation.
