Long read, please take your time. 💜👌🏼
As we all know, South Africa is known for its good qualities - great views & locations, amazing food & fantastic music. This all fades away when you learn more about the women that lives in it.
What's wrong with the women you may ask? It isn't about what women are DOING, but what are being DONE to them.
R**e. Murder. Abuse.
These are only 3 of many words that women unfortunately use at least once in their lifetime when living in South Africa.
Gender Based Violence (GBV) is a topic way too many women in South Africa know. According to authoritative sources and glossaries, Gender Based Violence is defined as any harmful act perpetrated against a person on the basis of socially ascribed gender differences or unequal power dynamics. This type of violence is rooted in gender inequality and results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, or economic harm or suffering.
If you don't understand the definition of GBV and want something more detailed - go ask the victims of this horrific act. They'll tell you every detail of hoe they were violated and how they "luckily" or "somehow" got through this life-threatening experience.
As a GBV Survivor, I respect the women who went through this trauma and decided to heal rather than shy away from society and the specific type of people in it. The women who stood their ground even if the corrupt justice system tried to silence them through lack of interest, showing no compassion and refusing to do their job.
We SEE you. We HEAR you. We APPRECIATE you!💜
To the women who were silenced; not by the justice system, but physically by the offender💜
You will be remembered! Your name will hold a different weight in people's lives, conversations and in history.
To all those who took part in the G20 Women's Shutdown today💜
Thank you. We appreciate you!
I joined the 15 minute silent lie-down and while I closed my eyes and everything got silent; I remembered my trauma. I remember my story. Someone in our staff room played the Women For Change's Live on Instagram and that's where we heard the names of the 5578 women. I suddenly got emotional and felt grateful. I'm grateful for the fact that my name isn't on the list. Yes, I got assaulted and yes I'm part of the statistic, but I could've been on that list. I'm a survivor. One day I hope to be strong enough to tell others my story but before that, I'm giving myself the space to feel every emotion as deeply and as necessary as it must seem. I must heal. The trauma wasn't my fault, but the healing is my responsibility.
If you've been affected by this act, I want you to remember it's not your fault. You didn't have a choice in whether this would happen to you or not. The choice was made by a predator. You didn't deserve it. YOU ARE LOVED!💜
As we move forward, let's respect our women. You don't know what they've gone through or what they're currently going through. A smile could actually change a person's life.💜
