It's called the silent extinction — and most people have never even heard of it 🦒

While the world worries about rhinos, elephants, lions, and more, giraffes have been quietly disappearing in the background. The expanding human population, habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, civil unrest, and human-wildlife conflict are all taking their toll on the tallest animal on Earth.

Today is World Giraffe Day. I'm sharing this little one as my small way of saying: don't let them go unnoticed!

While we need to worry about all extinctions, let's also remember to stand tall for giraffes 🧡💛

Some highlights from our and my 36th birthday trip 💚. We’ll always return to - no matter what!

Happy 100th birthday and happy 36th birthday to me! 🥰

There’s something truly humbling about sitting at the water’s edge and just listening. These giants have been doing this long before us, and with a bit of luck and a lot of conservation effort, they’ll be doing it long after us too.

Today is a reminder of why wild spaces like Kruger matter so much — not just for the wildlife, but for the soul. 🌍
Happy World Environment Day from me (and very loudly, from the hippos) 🦛

In a week’s time I’ll be switching from the dreaded MS Teams ringtone to the sounds of the Lowveld 💚. See you soon, !

You’ll want to turn your sound up for this one! 🔊

There are scenes in nature that speak most powerfully in black and white. Where the absence of colour forces your eye to find what truly matters...

The gnarled twist of ancient wood.
The delicate silhouette of a small bird against an open sky.
The interplay of light and shadow on weathered bark that has seen a hundred seasons come and go.

This Natal Francolin, perched alone at the top of a dead tree in Marakele National Park, gave me one of those scenes.

The grey ghost of Africa.

The Greater Kudu has earned its ghostly nickname well. These magnificent antelope can disappear into the African bush with barely a sound, despite being one of the continent's largest species.

Bulls can stand over 1.5 metres at the shoulder and carry breathtaking spiral horns that can reach 1.8 metres in length. But it was this female who stopped us in our tracks at Marakele National Park.

No horns.
No fanfare.
Just those extraordinary ears, that calm and penetrating gaze, and the quiet confidence of an animal who knew she had nothing to fear.

The first game drive of a SANParks trip... There is nothing quite like it.

We pulled out of Marakele's Bontle camp into a soft Limpopo morning, the roads still damp from overnight rain and the bush glittering with a freshness that only comes after a good downpour.

Just outside camp, half-hidden in the yellow wildflowers and dripping scrub, this male ostrich watched us pass — unbothered, unhurried and entirely in his element. The rain had clearly not dampened his morning!

Completely at home in a way that reminded us that we were in fact the visitors here.

Nobody does Friday quite like this Natal Francolin 💃

We spotted this absolute character at Marakele National Park, and we are fairly convinced he had checked the calendar. The moment we raised the camera, he launched into what can only be described as the most enthusiastic Friday dance the Limpopo bushveld has ever seen 😂.

Happy Friday, everyone! I hope your weekend is as unbothered and joyful as this little guy's.
