🐾 Scent of the King: Male Lion Musking in Madikwe 🦁

Ever seen a lion curl his lip like this? That’s called musking — which is performing a "flehmen response" which is a behaviour where the lion curls back its lips, opens its mouth, and inhales through the Jacobson’s organ (a sensory organ in the roof of the mouth).

This behaviour helps the lion detect pheromones, especially those found in the urine or scent markings of other lions. It's a vital part of how lions communicate, determine reproductive status, and assess territory and rivals.
