For me, every time I take a portrait, I form a connection with the person on the other end of my lens. I get to know them. I get to capture their relationship with those who matter most to them. The love between them. The connection I have with them is deepened during the editing process when I have their faces in front of me on the monitor, sometimes for days. And when they pass on, as has happened to me twice in the past 3 months, I feel a mixture of sadness that they’re no longer here and gratitude that I got to preserve the love they have for their loved ones.

Rest In Peace, Koos. Thank you for the time we got to spend taking these photographs. I’m so sorry for your loss, Jaco, Sheldene, and all your family. My thoughts are with you all.

Welcome to the world, Scarlett Rose Fourie!
This letter is for you to read when you're older. I want you to know that I feel so blessed to be able to photograph you while you're still so little. You're so very precious. I'd like you to know how much your mom and dad love you. Your mom always talks about how perfect you are and your dad is just beaming with pride and joy to have you. Even when you get angry with them, remember how much they love you. They just want to protect you and make sure that you're safe and have a wonderful life. Speaking of your life... You have an entire lifetime of possibilities ahead of you. You can make your life anything you want it to be. There will be challenges, but there will be lots of wonderful, memorable times too! Take the ups and downs in your stride and never, ever give up. I'm looking forward to watching you grow.

Bringing a baby girl into the world is such a special thing. It's giving life - she has the opportunity to grow, learn and create her own life, allowing her to blossom and eventually spread her wings.

I feel so privileged to be a part of this special moment in this baby's life and to preserve it for her for when she's older. She's coming into a home where she's enveloped by so much love.

My hope is that this short video captures the sense of love and the eager anticipation of her arrival.

I don't usually photograph birthday parties, but when I was asked to photograph this special birthday, I just couldn't say no. Aleah and Levi turn 4 and 5 within a few weeks of each other and their shared birthday party made for double the fun! The beautiful - and delicious - cakes and cupcakes were baked by The Licked Spoon.

| Going Jurassic in the Park |

It's all about fun and play. The two boys decided that we would all be dinosaurs during this session and that brought out so much laughter and goofing around.

The goofing around meant that I could set them up the way that I wanted and interact with them to get the expressions that bring the photographs from their session to life.

This one was created by telling them to sit next to each other (still playing off the dinosaur theme) and then telling the Tyrannosaurus Rex to grab his little brother, the Velociraptor. As I found out, they really know their dinosaurs!

The first take was utter chaos, but we re-enacted the scene and because they knew what was coming, they both burst into laughter (I did too - just as well I remembered to focus and click the shutter-release button).

For the record, Triceratops was my favourite dinosaur when I was a child (and still is), but the boys decided that it was my job to be a Pterodactyl because I was flying around taking pictures.
