I have my eye on the weekend!!!

Here is a cool fact about a hippos eye: Hippos possess a specialized, transparent third eyelid called a nictitating membrane.
Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in rivers and lakes, this clear membrane acts like a natural pair of built-in goggles. It slides horizontally across the eye to protect it from aquatic debris, mud, and waterborne bacteria while still allowing the hippo to see clearly underwater.
Additionally, their eyes (along with their ears and nostrils) are positioned on the very top of their skull. This anatomical setup allows them to keep almost their entire multi-ton body submerged and cool while maintaining full visual awareness of their surroundings above the surface.

The look you get for interrupting a courtship by taking photos!!

This Lovely Fairywren was doing his best to entertain a few females when I heard their singing. With their constant fluttering and movements, they are tricky subjects however after numerous attempts this beautiful male finally sat still to give me this look, a few quick captures and he darted off again.

An early morning drive before we had to pack up and leave found us this beautiful lioness. She has to have been one of the biggest females I have ever seen, sheer presence and power. She crossed the road in front of us then walked back onto the road slowly making her way. At one stage she stopped to sniff a shrub, she turned to give us this look which I was fortunate enough to be able to capture. Not long after, she melted away into the bush. What a moment!!

Another great sighting at Michaelmas Cay was this pair of Brown Noddys. They would take flight straight up into the air and have their fisticuffs before landing in the same spot only to repeat this agin and again.

Does anyone know what or why this was happening? There never seemed to be a result.

The last look before trotting off in search of breakfast.

When we first saw this pack of Wild Dogs, they were slowly walking through the bush towards us, it was early in the morning, just at sunrise. One by one they arrived onto the track and after their “morning greetings” with each other they turned and began their trot. This individual gave us one last look before turning away and disappearing.

The waddle! I absolutely love these birds. Their characters and behaviour are so interesting and entertaining. The males waddle around looking for bits of nesting material and if they happen to be a fair distance, 10m or more away from the female and nest, they then fly back with the material, hand it to the female before waddling off again.

It’s not often that you have a giraffe feeding at eye level. This chap had to bend down a fair bit to reach this shrub....

This Little Kingfisher has always kept his distance from people. A recent afternoon I had spotted it sitting in the middle of the lake as usual and I chose to photograph a Jacana that was going about its business. A few moments later, this chap landed on a branch a few metres from me, what a pleasant surprise as it allowed to numerous photos before darting off again.

Right of way!

A young elephant bull slowly makes his way out of the bush in the morning sun. We had come across a breeding herd of elephants and as they slowly moved through the bush feeding, we were able to sit and watch them. When they moved deeper into the bush the stragglers crossed the road one by one giving us good views before they disappeared.

I had the privilege of heading to out visit a seabird colony on the weekend, what a great experience.

Here we have a Brown B***y coming into land with some nesting material. These striking birds were fascinating to watch, the interactions between male and female are so affectionate. I will be posting a few photos of them over the coming weeks.
