A rare sighting of a Purple-crested Turaco sitting in the open a few meters from me.

These colourful birds normally remain in fairly dense foliage, coming into the open to have a quick drink or a feed. This one landed near me and was not concerned in the least. After around 10min it flew off and landed in a nearby tree, its distinct call reverberating through the bush.

The Southern Bald Ibis. One of four species of Ibis found in South Africa.

Found in the East/North East parts of South Africa. Generally an uncommon bird but when seen, it is unmistakable.

Strangely enough. I was able to photograph this one in a small town that we were passing through. A great sighting and opportunity.

A sequence of images showing a Black-fronted Dotterel chasing another out of its personal area.

As the water retreated, food became more scarce and the competition intensified. All the birds started protecting their little spots.

These Dotterels are incredibly quick and it took many tries to get these images and even then, they sadly aren’t the sharpest.

Bee-eaters always manage to bring a flash of colour to the bush. Darting off from their perch to either grab an insect or to dive into the water, they are certainly busy birds.

Once in a while you find them sitting for a few minutes which allows one to have a good look at their colours and patterns. This White-fronted Bee-eater gave us quite a show before having a brief rest.

A Great Egret makes a nice contrast with the green reeds as it hunts for breakfast.

At the end of a busy morning we were checking out one last spot before a well deserved coffee break. This beautiful Egret was stalking through the reeds and made for a great photo opportunity.

The juvenile Black-necked Stork seemed to have less success at hunting compared to the adults, could this be due to age and experience. It did however have some success which was great to see.

I found that the colours of this beautiful bird just popped when the light was perfect. Watching it hop and prance through the water herding fish was so cool.

These young male Sahul Sunbirds were out in numbers feeding on the nectar of these gorgeous pink flowers.

With so many flowers to go around you would think that conflict would be at a minimum but alas, the teenagers couldn’t control themselves and before long, two of them got stuck into each other. After a few minutes of fisticuffs they parted and went their separate ways.

A Sacred Kingfisher poses beautifully on a bare branch. I have been fortunate enough to photograph many species of Kingfishers from around the world. Each of them of just stunningly beautiful in their own way.

Last weekend this trusting Sacred Kingfisher gave us so fantastic photo opportunities. It was fairly busy, often darting off and then returning to this perch a few minutes later. This is something a can spend several hours doing, sitting, waiting and hopefully capturing a great image.

The past few weekends have been filled with watching these Black-necked Storks hunting in a small temporary wetland. With the water rapidly receding, the fish are more easily caught.

The massive birds stalk up and down until the flush a fish then the almost prance and hop in a dance like fashion with the wings in various extensions to herd the fish into a more suitable position before a lightening quick strike ends it.

Here are some photos of the of the whole process.

Getting low level images of Pied Stilts has always been a favourite of mine. This weekend the opportunity arose again and needless to say, I am happy with the results. A great morning spent with

This chap was walking up and down in front of me hunting for some tasty morsels, with the sun starting to rise, giving the background a nice orange glow, it made for some great photos.
