The spray at 7:49am doesn’t behave the way it does at 9am. At that hour, backlit, it stops being water and becomes atmosphere.

I positioned myself head-on, exposed to hold his face rather than let him become a silhouette, and waited.

Durban holds more faith traditions than most cities will ever know. These four images. A mosque at dusk, a skyline swallowed by rain, Shembe worshippers at the sea, a solitary figure against the first light are fragments of a fourteen-year attempt to bear witness to that.
This city prays in ways that don’t always make the news. This work tries to stay close to that.
