The 2018 campaign was launched to 100 media and invited guests at The Pavilion Hotel on Friday, 26 January 2018.

Each guest was spoilt with a "coffee and cake for two" voucher from CHÂTEAU GÂTEAUX thanks to Anna Kelly.

Guests enjoyed a buffet breakfast and then learnt the five 2018 Sign Language phrases. Gugu Ntini also performed a beautiful poem in Sign Language.

Justice Zak Yacoob (President of the KZNBDS) addressed the guests and told them more about the KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society and the keynote speaker, Mrs Kanaye, shared her story of how difficult it was bringing up two Deaf children, many years ago, when teaching Sign Language to Deaf children was frowned upon. She also explained why the launch of the first-ever Talk Sign 1 Sign Language Phrase Book was so vital. The media all received complimentary copies of this book.

Lloyd Paul, a loyal Talk Sign ambassador entertained the guests with a high energy rap song.

Talk Sign Day is on 9 March 2018. Please buy a sticker for R10 and wear it to promote Deaf awareness and encourage the hearing to learn basic Sign Language.

Eye Can Walk Launch

Blind Comrades runner, Richard Monisi, was tragically killed in a hit-an-run accident in June earlier this year. He’d been walking to the local shopping centre with a friend when a car veered out of control and hit them both. This was one incident, of many, highlighting the urgent need for motorists to be more aware of Blind pedestrians.

On Wednesday 13 September, the KZN Blind and Deaf Society hosted a breakfast event to launch their inaugural “Eye Can Walk” campaign to the media and other VIP guests. With October being Eye Care Awareness month, this “walk with a difference” event will take place on Sunday 15 October, to coincide with International White Cane Day, commemorated annually. The start is at Berea Rovers, and the participants will proceed towards Blue Lagoon via the beachfront, finally returning to Rovers. During the 5km event the participants will be encouraged to walk in pairs, with one person being partially blindfolded and led by the other person (with a reversal of roles half way into the walk).

Justice Zak Yacoob, President of the KZNBDS, welcomed the guests and explained what the society has to offer its Blind and Deaf clients, and went on to explain why there is a need to raise awareness among the sighted community.

Guests were entertained by Bonginkosi Zindela who played the keyboard and sang, and Siyabonga Vilakazi who shared an honest, and at times amusing, story of his life “as a white cane user” after the loss of his sight more than ten years ago.

Stated by Shamila Surjoo, Director of the KZNBDS, “We could have chosen the promenade for the walk, but that would have lost the impact of the message we are trying to convey to motorists: that they need to be careful and aware of Blind pedestrians and athletes.”

The Orientation and Mobility team asked two guests to volunteer to be blindfolded and guided through the venue to demonstrate the correct way of leading a Blind person.

Entries are now open for “Eye Can Walk” at only R50pp including one blindfold per pair. Food stalls and entertainment will be on offer on the day! Visit www.eventtiming.info/eyecanwalk to enter or visit www.facebook.com/eyecanwalk for more info or email [email protected].

The KZNBDS would like to thank the following sponsors for their support: The Pavilion Hotel, Pop Up Coffee, Remax Panache (Charmaine Lingard), Dr Kavi Naidu, Martie Willemse, The Laser Studio, JMV Textiles, SAWF, Verulam Athletics, The Holiday Express, The A-List and Aquelle.

Talk Sign 2017 gathered momentum at an event hosted by Chateau Gateaux Patisserie in Durban North on 1 March, attended by 20 VIP guests and the media.

Everyone is encouraged to buy a Talk Sign sticker for only R10 and wear it on Talk Sign Day (Friday, 10th of March). Talk Sign Campaign Manager Alice Leah explained, “We are so excited by our collaboration with the nine Chateau Gateaux branches in KZN and Gauteng who have embraced this KZN Blind & Deaf Society initiative. This is the first time that the campaign has secured a large retailer to sell stickers to the public, which skyrockets the availability of stickers. The Talk Sign Campaign aims to popularise South African Sign Language (SASL) and the money raised from sticker sales is used for the education of the Deaf and hard of hearing, and to assist with job creation and placement.”
