A View of Wildschutsberg. September 2020, Langvlei, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. I’m sorry I haven’t posted in a while but I’ve honestly been finding social media rather draining lately, to the point that it starts taking the enjoyment out of photography. I’ve decided to go back to only posting once a week so keep your eyes peeled for a new shot every Tuesday. Got this one from the edge of the escarpment near Molteno looking over the flats around Sterkstroom. It’s not often that I find myself satisfied with a photo taken in high-contrast, midday light but the shadows really appealed to me in this scene and the Wildschutsberg appears so striking and imposing from this angle.

A Lone Vachellia. September 2020, Cold Stream, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. I always thought our thorn trees were acacias, apparently not. While higher and harsher than their preferred altitude and climes I always find it interesting that a few of these trees occur on the Halston Flats. A handful of hardened and determined (or just plain lucky) specimens dot the landscape here and there and I’ve been threatening to photograph this one in particular for quite some time.

Pocket of Green (take 2). August 2020, Denwood, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. A repeat post but I’ve come to prefer the vertical crop aspect of this scene far more than the last version I posted. I also spent a bit more time on the editing and feel like it now has a better balanced tonal range and a warmer feel.

Misty Views of Vogel Vlei. September 2020, Lemoenfontein, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. Another sunrise picture from Lemoenfontein. It was overcast and misty when I set up but the sun and the mist seemed to be working in tandem to create this scene. The mist lifted slightly just as the sun peeked through a gap in the hills. I feel perhaps a smartphone screen won’t do this image justice. I’ve spent hours staring at enlarged areas in the valley.Horses, trees, cows, buildings, roads: a scene packed with details. I may just have to do a large print of this one to fully appreciate it all.

Thysfontein and Beyond. September 2020, Thysfontein, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. Another beautiful Stormberg sunrise. There was a light sprinkling of spring frost which made the air crisp and clean and ensured the far blue blue peaks of the drakensberg stood out in strong stark layers.

Alpenglow. September 2020, Lemoenfontein, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. This morning's sunrise was spectacular. There was a thick blanket of mist and cloud over most of the hilltops of Lemoenfontein and Thysfontein which began to clear as the sun rose. The result was streaks of light illuminating some of the hills and leaving others in shadow: a layered alpenglow effect at its most stunning.

August 2020, Lemoenfontein, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. Perhaps not the best framed composition but the effect of the sun peaking through the clouds was enjoyable: Diffused enough to create a general soft glow across the scene but just sharp enough to fringe the grass and rocks with a golden outline.

Framed. August 2020, Klipplaat, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. Something out of the ordinary and rather fun. I was on my way down from the top of Tafelkop when I found this small overhang. On a whim I decided to crawl inside and see if it might have a nice view. A bit cramped but I managed to get a shot of Nooidgedacht framed by it.

Inverted. August 2020, Klipplaat, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. I Perhaps found this composition a bit too late and the shadows had already completely engulfed the all but the immediate foreground but still an interesting scene which I want to revisit sometime. I really like the sense of inversion one gets when looking between the two flanking rocks down onto the ridge below.

Well Weathered. March 2019, Boshoffskraal, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. Keeping with the theme of strange rocks and seeing as things are feeling summery again, I thought I’d dig this one up from the archive. By far one of the most colorful and dramatic sunsets I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve posted a few different iterations of the same scene over the last year but I’ve come to decide that this is my favourite version. I think due to the harmonious purple tinge of both stone and cloud juxtaposed against the greens of the midground.

A Reptilian Rock. September 2020, Lemoenfontein, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. I stumbled across this rock whilst looking for an interesting foreground. I found that the pattern weathered into its surface made it rather reminiscent of something reptilian. As the sun sank lower the shadows in the cracks deepened, making the effect all the more pronounced.

Sun Rays Over Middelberg, September 2020, Stormberg, Stormberg Mountains, Eastern Cape. Days of broken cloud cover always seem to create some of the most dramatic scenes. I spent most of the evening getting shots of various sporadic beams of light illuminating the landscape. Albeit a very hit and miss process, I managed to get this shot of Middelberg from the road just as the clouds opened and washed the scene in crepuscular beams of light.
