Just to let you know that we have nearly finished with the next release of Digital Photo SA. I have posted the cover that I used for the Sep 1999 edition of Camera&Image that has the image that Johan Wilke gave us for the cover. We will shortly be doing a tribute to him.

Finally, I have closure on the very sudden passing of John Wilke. Fortunately, I have kept most of the work that I did for Camera&Image. I did have the very first interview and the body of work that Johan gave me at that time in 1999. In respect to Johan's memory, I will endeavour to redo that article. This was Johan's answer to the last question that I asked of him in closing of the interview;

"Be a photographer. Don't try and categorise yourself too much. The best photographers are photographers who are passionate about photography and who simply cannot leave it alone. There is no easy way in. Pay your dues, like the rest of us, and you will eventually get there.

Photography could be so much further in this country if the photographer was given more freedom and is regarded as a person and is respected for his creative ability."

I will keep all of you informed as to when the article will appear. Continue to look after yourselves as the Coronavirus is still going to be with us for quite a while.

Johan Wike’s passing came as an absolute shock to me. However, this got me thinking as to his and a few other photographers that were involved with the life and success of Camera&Image. Johan was a significant part of this. There are many but Richard du Toit, Michael Knight, Patrick De Mervelec, David Dodd’s and Peter Bendheim were involved continuously. There were many other great photographers, such as Roger Ballen and Jurgen Shadenberg, SA’s Cartier- Bresson. There is absolutely no time like the present to thank them albeit Johan Wilke posthumously. I located one of the first body of work that Johan ever shared with me. In the not too distant future, I will be featuring the work of these remarkable people again. All absolute masters of their craft. This one of the many covers that Michael did for me that he titled ‘Ice Maiden’ just as Johan was a sheer creative genius and with Michaels consent, I will once again publish a body of his work that I know that you will all enjoy.

I will be posting an editorial content letter in the next release of DPSA so you will all know more–work in progress.
