A very sunny afternoon at Vrede & Lust, colourful flowers, dinner outside between the vineyards, napkins flying through the air and a dance floor that got progressively more chaotic as the night went on. 😂

Just a really, really lekker day.

There is just something about wedding speeches in Afrikaans that hits differently.

Maybe it’s because the jokes are funnier, the stories are better and somehow you can go from laughing your head off to wiping away a tear in the space of about 30 seconds.

And then there was the vasdans. So much vasdans. 😂

It was pretty lekker getting to celebrate this one in my home language.

The day was a blur from start to finish, and I was SO happy when I opened the photos and this is what waited for me.

Maritza & Dihan at Bakenhof, Paarl.

It was windy as hell, the food was incredible (especially that pork belly), the speeches were hilarious and somehow everyone just kept the day moving despite a stomach bug that had already started making its way through the guests the day before. Multiple people ended up in hospital. 😭

And yet, looking at these photos now, all I remember is how much fun this wedding was.

Maritza and I bonded over skincare and a shared appreciation for the finer things in life. Dihan and I bonded over getting things done quickly and efficiently. Which, honestly, tells you quite a lot about both of them.

And then there was the dancing, the ridiculous amount of laughter, the people they love most all in one place, and a whole lot of moments that I definitely didn’t see coming.

I completely forgot the guests had no idea this was coming.

Everyone was enjoying welcome drinks, traditional food and getting their henna done.

Then the dhol started.

Roy came around the corner on horseback, surrounded by smoke and the sound of the dhol echoing through the trees. One by one, the guests realised what was happening and got pulled into it. Before long, everyone was dancing alongside Roy as the procession made its way to the ceremony.

I’ve photographed a few Indian weddings over the years, but this Sikh ceremony at Diamant Estate is one I’ll remember for a long time. It was led by a family member who explained each tradition as it happened, where it came from, and why it’s still relevant today. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a ceremony explained quite like that.
