What is heavy metal music?
Well, the phrase "Am gonna enjoy metal" or "Re ja metal" as commonly used in Botswana, no longer raises an eye brow as people now know is obviously music of the gods, we're talking about.
Heavy metal music is a genre of rock music that has originated in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This kind of music is characterized by its heavy use of distorted electric guitars, powerful drumming, and often aggressive vocals. There are many subgenres of heavy metal, each with its own unique sound and style. This are some of the most popular subgenres of heavy metal music:-
TRADITIONAL HEAVY METAL-
Is the original version of heavy metal, with bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest into the genre and It typically features melodic guitar riffs, powerful vocals, and a focus on storytelling lyrics.
THRASH METAL-
Is a more aggressive version of heavy metal that started in the early 1980s. It is characterized by fast, complex guitar riffs, fast drumming, and shouted or screaming vocals. The common knowledge pioneering bands of this sub genre are bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth.
DEATH METAL-
Is a subgenre that started in the mid-1980s. It is characterized by heavily distorted guitars, deep, guttural vocals, and often complex drumming. Death metal lyrics often talks about issues of violence, gore, torture, Morbid subjects, death and any other sensitive subjects that many feel uncomfortable talking about. Bands like Death, Possessed and Morbid Angel are often cited as pioneers of death metal.
BLACK METAL-
Is a subgenre that emerged in the early 1990s. It is characterized by fast, tremolo-picked guitar riffs, blast beat drumming, and shrieked vocals. Black metal lyrics often deal with themes like Satanism, paganism, and anti-Christianity. Bands like Mayhem, Burzum, and Darkthrone are pioneers of black metal.
POWER METAL-
Is a subgenre that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s. It is characterized by fast, melodic guitar riffs, soaring vocals, and often fantasy-based lyrics. Power metal often features symphonic elements like keyboards and orchestral arrangements. Bands like Helloween, Blind Guardian, and Dragon Force are the pioneers of power metal.
These are just a few examples of the many subgenres of heavy metal. Each one has its own unique sound and style, and there are many more subgenres beyond these. We will talk about Rock N Roll in the next coming INFORMATION SHARING ARTICLE.
