All these images were made between 2006 - 2010 along the Shosheloza Meyl Transkaroo Long Distance Journeys through South Africa. The contextualization processes and considerations of inner content and meaning have been a continuous process, outliving the completion of the shooting. The series invites the contemplation on the metaphors of the train journey (See Bottom) - and the photograph itself as a window, a mirror, a tool for self-reflection. I am only perhaps understanding the impetus and relevance of the act of repeated circular train journeys now, 8 - 11 years later. The inaugural train journey, in my very early years as a photographer, produced a series of negatives, which I first revisited in 2006 and so generated the urge to return. A selection of both sets were only printed at the end of 2009 for the first time, for my Masters in Fine Art exam. Except for that Postgraduate Exhibition, the work as a whole has never been publicized or exhibited even until now. Last year, in 2016, I created some diptychs for a group exhibition I was invited to participate in, in the Pinyao Photography Festival in China. I am seriously considering doing the journey again for the 3rd block before saying finito!........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Some metaphors, associations and symbolic possibilities:
Liminality- The moving capsule -
Transience- temporary states
Cycles of leaving and returning-
Parting -
Time - clock - repeating - déjà vu
mortality,
destiny
the soul, the spirit, the body earth.

When I was studying at MIchaelis, just out of school, I began my first sojourns through the streets of the Suburbs I lived in.
