New York-based, award-winning director of photography John Engstrom has lit productions for Ford, Pepsi, and Macy’s, served as DP on Doug Liman’s 360-degree VR series INVISIBLE, and runs Scheimpflug, one of New York’s most respected grip and lighting houses. Kwaku Alston is based in Los Angeles and has photographed Barack and Michelle Obama, shot campaigns for Apple, Nike, and Coca-Cola, and created key art for Netflix, Disney, and Universal.
For this session, John and Kwaku will break down two Omnibar shoots in two different production environments: John’s New York shoot and Kwaku’s Los Angeles shoot for artists Ari Abdul and Ezinma. We’ll look at how each team approached fast-moving setups, location changes, lighting decisions, and the practical realities of creating visually striking images under time pressure.
The conversation will focus on how lighting decisions get made, how a DP and gaffer think through different setups, and how Omnibar’s battery power, magnetic rigging, modular 2-foot and 4-foot configurations, pixel control, and compact form factor expanded what was possible on set.
