This passage had natural light, but it wasn't creating the image I had in mind.
Instead of accepting what was there, I looked for another opportunity.
The doorway in front of the bride became a stencil. By placing a single speedlight deep inside the adjoining room, the flash filled the doorway evenly, projecting a clean rectangle of hard light onto the wall behind her.
Before turning the flash on, I underexposed the ambient light until the passage felt dark and moody while still keeping enough detail to tell the story. Then I simply increased the flash power until the bride sat perfectly inside that rectangle of light.
No softbox.
No fancy modifier.
Just recognising what the scene was capable of.
