Luke Tannous loves people and is notorious for not being able to end a conversation. He is passionate about weddings because he believes that they are the perfect combination of fantasy and authenticity: a beautifully styled day that is filled with genuine emotions and real people. At each wedding, Luke challenges himself to capture both those elements equally well.

Photographers often ask how to “find their style.”

In my experience, style doesn’t come from deciding — it comes from experimenting. After years of trying different approaches, you naturally start leaning toward what feels right and letting go of what doesn’t.

That’s when consistency appears.
Not as limitation, but as clarity.

Style is the result, not the starting point.

A good LinkedIn headshot isn’t about posing or looking corporate.

Solid colours, simple grooming, and a calm process make the biggest difference. When people feel comfortable, confidence shows naturally.

Trends move fast in photography.

Timeless work moves slowly.

I’ve learned this by looking back at older projects — especially ones shaped heavily around trends. Even when the ex*****on was solid, the work often dated faster than expected.

The images that last tend to come from restraint, clarity, and intention. Not from chasing what’s loud or new.

Timeless work isn’t accidental.

It’s designed.

This article discuss the difference between timeless photography and trend photography. neither are negative but know what you want before you choose.

For the photographers out there!

Most people assume great portraits come down to the camera or the editing.

In reality, one of the biggest influences on how a portrait feels is the lens being used.

Different lenses change perspective, compression, and how close the camera feels during a shoot.

That directly affects how relaxed you are and how flattering the final image looks.

Wider lenses tend to include more of the environment, while longer lenses compress features and separate you from the background, creating a more cinematic feel.

In a place like Cape Town, where portraits are often shot on location and in natural light, lens choice becomes even more important. A photographer who understands their lenses deeply can adapt to changing conditions without breaking the flow of the session.

Consistency also matters. When a photographer regularly works with the same lenses, a distinct style starts to emerge. Perspective becomes intentional, images feel cohesive, and the work becomes recognisable over time.

The best portraits don’t come from chasing gear.

They come from familiarity, confidence, and creating space for people to feel comfortable in front of the camera.

In portrait photography, it’s easy to assume that the camera or the edit is what defines the final image. In reality, one of the most influential decisions happens much earlier, quietly, before the first frame is taken. The lens being used shapes not only how a portrait looks, but how the person b...

Most people think good portraits come from confidence.

They don’t.

They come from comfort.

When the technical side is handled quietly, people relax.

Posture improves. Expressions soften. The image starts to feel natural rather than performed.

Good photography doesn’t force confidence.

It creates space for it.

One of the most common misconceptions about portrait photography is that great images come from confident people. That belief alone stops many people from ever booking a photoshoot. They assume they need to arrive knowing how to pose, how to stand, how to look relaxed in front of a camera. In reali

Most people feel nervous before a professional photoshoot.

Unless you’re a professional model, that’s completely normal.
Over the years — especially when I use to photograph weddings — I learned that when people feel overwhelmed, they don’t need more instruction. They need calm.

They need someone to quietly take control and remove whatever is adding pressure.

The same applies to portrait photography.
You don’t need to know how to pose or how to look confident.

When the process feels steady and intentional, people relax. And when people relax, the images take care of themselves.

Good photography doesn’t force confidence.

It creates space for it.

Have you ever felt nervous before taking a professional photo? Unless you’re a professional model — and most people aren’t — that feeling is completely normal. Knowing how to pose, what to do with your hands, or how to look natural on camera isn’t something people instinctively know. It’...
