Namaqua National Park
27 August 2022

The final post from our trip! We spent the Friday at the Springbok Inn, and headed home via the Namaqua National Park, a first visit for all of us. The weather was perfect for viewing the flowers.
This was a great way to end a trip that had a real scary start 😳
We even saw the Southern Double-collared Sunbird at the picnic site...no surprises with all those flowers 🙂

Augrabies Falls National Park
24-26 August 2022 - The Falls, The River, The Landscape

My penultimate post of our trip...and not a single animal or bird shot 🙂 The park is much bigger than I thought. I covered just over a third of the tracks on my solo drive...never got to the quiver tree forest section. I would still love to visit when the numerous channels of the falls are in full flow. Maybe next time...

Augrabies Falls National Park
24-26 August 2022 - Mammals & Birds

Upon our arrival we quickly checked out the flow of the falls after setting up camp. On our only full day in the park I went on a solo drive while my fellow campers - Gerry, Jacqui and Mladen - opted to go hiking instead. The drive included a short 4x4 section and took in some beautiful views. I also had some decent bird sightings, including the Booted Eagle, even though I couldn't see its legs. The bird sightings around our campsite were also great, with the Crested Barbet making regular appearances.

In the afternoon I revisited the various scenic views of the Orange (Gariep) River with Gerry...much better lighting conditions - pics to follow in next post. We had two Genets encroaching on our space during our evening braai.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
23 August 2022

Our final full day in the park. We drove up to the Auchterlonie museum in the morning along the Auob River road. We were tail-gated by an international couple who felt that being with us would help their sightings - hope they were also birders 😀
We joined some vehicles waiting to see the leopard under a tree , near the museum. We eventually got to see it on the way back, but no real photo opportunity.
Our afternoon drive took us to Kij Kij waterhole and back. the highlight here was the Pygmy Falcon eating some reptile. Kgalagadi gave us some great sightings, despite us not seeing any Hyena.
Next up...Augrabies Falls National Park.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
22 August 2022 - PM Drive

We continued our loop along the short dune road to the Auob River road. Once we reached the Auob River, my spotter 🙂 located the Leopard along the calcrete ridge and caves. It regularly marked its territory as it moved along. Further on we saw the Martial Eagle. I waited almost 45mins to try and get it in flight...and almost missed that opportunity 🙈
Most of the remaining birds in this post were taken at the campsite, as they found a feast of ants and bugs close to our site.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
22 August 2022 - AM Drive

Our first game drive from Twee Rivieren took us north along the Nossob River road to Kij Kij waterhole. From there we went across the short dune road and return along the Auob River road. The drive to Kij Kij included sightings of the usual antelope - Gemsbok, Blue Wildebeest and Springbok. At the Kij Kij waterhole it was the Burchell's Sandgrouse's turn to to drink - the various birds seem to have different time-slots 🙂
Besides the Sandgrouses, I also focussed on the Lanner Falcon who was hoping to catch one for his morning meal.

Then, along comes this solo Cheetah!! 😀 Since I had already positioned myself to shoot the Lanner, I managed to get off some lovely shots. We tracked him for a short while afterwards, until it disappeared into the bush. Once again...luck and timing!!
We continued our drive along the short dune road...

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
21 August 2022

We had to bid farewell to Nossob after spending seven great nights there. Our journey south to Twee Rivieren included our first Kudu sighting as well as a very shy Steenbok. The other antelope along the way included the Gemsbok and Springbok.
After a quick pitstop at the Dikbaardskolk picnic site, we headed further south. As we approached the Kameelsleep waterhole, we noticed a number of cars parked there. Since both Mladen and I were towing, we had to approach slowly since reversing wasn't an option. Finally...LEOPARDS!! 😀
During the 30+mins that we watched them, they put on quite a show. The female leopard tried initiating mating many times, with the male finally succumbing to her advances just before we left 🙂 The time of day made it difficult to get decent shots because of a photography issue called Long Lens Heat Distortion, but the post-processing helped to an extent with the shots posted here.
Further on we also came across two male lions sleeping under a tree/bush - no real photo opportunity, so nothing to show here. We ended our long journey south with the sighting of the Bat-eared Foxes.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
20 August 2022 - PM Drive

In the afternoon we decided to drive north to Bedinkt waterhole, since I was hoping to get some shots of Bateleurs in flight. While the Bateleurs were around, they were just too far to get any workable shots. The Kori Bustard and African Hoopoe were the only notable birds around. We were the last car at the waterhole when "luck and timing" kicked in again...
While I was still busy focussing on the African Hoopoe, Gerry saw some movement on the road. LIONS!! And heading straight to the waterhole - two adult females and a young male. With no cars around, I could once again get into the best shooting position. I swear that I wasn't giving the young male lion his posing instructions...the future Lion King was a natural in front of the camera 🙂 They gave us over 30mins of their time in the best possible golden hour light, before moving off. So that was a total of 7 lions in one day...not bad!! 😀
Finished off the day with another Tawny Eagle shot on our way back to camp.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
20 August 2022 - AM Drive

Our morning started with a 30min stop at the Rooikop waterhole, since we heard that there might be leopard in the area. No leopard...only doves drinking at the base of the tree 😕 Next, we went along Marie's Loop where we found some lion tracks...a promising sign. At Marie's waterhole we saw the relaxed-looking Blue Wildebeest and Springbok, so no predators around.
Once we exited the loop, heading south, we came across the source of those tracks 😀 Three young lions (adolescent cubs) on the side of the road... Since we were the first car to arrive, I could get myself into the best position to shoot. The mother then also appeared. The young lions were very curious and interested in the bumpers and tyres of the other arriving vehicles. Managed to get off some lovely shots before the traffic congestion. After giving us about 45mins of their time, the mother called them and they disappeared into the bush.
Mladen suggested that we head back to camp to celebrate the sighting and enjoy a tradition bacon & egg breakfast. Perfect!! 😉
