My Mandela day.

I recently wrote a short story after I interviewed a few men who live at Geoff Burton House at The Hope Exchange. I've again realised how privileged I am, and most of my friends and acquaintances in my network and on FB. As we are all still in COVID "lockdown" what are you going to do this Mandela day to make a difference in someone's life?

I challenge all of us who still have a job and an income to help those who are not so fortunate, who are already or might be faced with living on the street.

Read my story, and if you like it, share it and give a gift of hope by donating something to The Hope Exchange to help them fight homelessness.

My goal is to raise R6 700. That will help 5 people to pay their residence fees for a month. Visit The Hope Exchange's home page to donate via EFT, Payfast or Snapscan. Reference KH if possible.

The hobo never missed a day. He worked from early till late, dutifully taking note of everyone who came past his corner. Breathing the crispness of autumn as she walked past him his stale alcohol breath bounced back at her “Nice shoes today mam,” he was drunk at 9:30 – already or still? She passed him every morning and every morning she had the same judgement. [ 1,644 more word ]

Nestled in the heart of Hermanus is a place where you can kick-off and loose yourself in the view over the deep blue water of Walkerbay. From Hamewith Penthouse guests can whale watch and people watch from early morning too late at night while catching a tan or having sun-downer. It's the perfect location from where to explore the town (on foot) and the surrounding area with short day-trip excursions. [ 141 more words ]

What stood out as an overarching highlight was that we truly rested, we mostly read and took afternoon naps under palm trees. No-one rushed us through breakfast, lunch or dinner and there were no deadlines to consider when we ordered our first full-colour cocktail every day at 11am, nor did anyone care if we had coconut ice cream for starters, main and desert.

Tropical rain clouds welcomed fourteen friends and family as we touched down on Mauritian shores after sunset. Stepping out onto the island the Frangipani scented air stuck to our skin and droplets…

I fell in love with this project in Cape Town last year when I personally met some of the people living on the street. This is a reality that we can not ignore, and it's a fact that homelessness is not destined to only a select few. It can happen to anyone.
The Carpenter's Shop had to re-brand to The Hope Exchange to be more relevant. I am giving my time and my experience to help the team create awareness and to help this worthy cause.
I urge you to get connected, like the page, follow their work and donate your time or money.
R400 per month allows a homeless person to wash 5 days a week, get lunch 7 days a week and breakfast on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Twice in one day. . . another published work.
" We are pleased to announce that your poem titled "Age Rage" has been selected as part of our literary journal, The Coinage Book Two."
Thanks Lucinda Jolly for your continuous instruction during our year of study to submit our work for publication.
