In August 2021, the ambitious mission to reintroduce 12 cheetahs from South Africa and Malawi back into the Zambeze Delta ecosystem in Mozambique took place.

It is estimated that fewer than 7,000 African cheetahs are living in the wild today, with the population having halved over the past four decades. This would not have been possible without the , .carter Wildlife Conservation Alliance, , , , and who came together to make this relocation possible.

A special thank you to the Cabela Family Foundation, founded by Dick and Mary Cabela through their shared love for wildlife and Africa to further conservation on the continent. They have played an important role in restoring the Zambeze Delta's historic diversity, which had been decimated by the Civil War.

Watch the full 14 minute short film - available in the link in our bio👆 to see how the reintroduction of cheetahs to Coutada 11 has the potential to expand the southern African Cheetah metapopulation by 30%.

I find it a strange thought that wildlife numbers are currently only fraction of their former abundance as a result of the human footprint and now the only hope that these vestiges of biodiversity have left, lies in the hands of the ones that created the problem in the first place. ⠀
⠀
That said, the is one of the institutions having a massive impact, working at the forefront of wildlife conservation by not only focusing on educating and training people but also through their groundbreaking K9 units. ⠀
⠀
Just as the college is enabling the training and education of our future rangers, so too are are they instrumental in the training of these anti-poaching hounds to be.⠀
⠀
These pups are the next generation of the SAWC K9 Unit and are trained to track at high speeds under incredibly challenging conditions. It is a strange world we live in where animals have become one of the best available resources for protecting other animals. ⠀
⠀
These little guys are destined to become great warriors for conservation 🐾⠀

Check out to learn about the ground-breaking work they are doing to advance wildlife research for conservation. This institute consists of a dedicated team who are working at the forefront of science, across many different fields of study around the world 🌍

This short film showcases their various projects as well as giving some insight into their outlook on what we can do to preserve our biodiversity into the anthropocene and beyond.

I have had the privilege of filming on two of their projects so far - the efforts to successfully collect and fertilise eggs from the last northern white rhinos in the hope of saving the species and their cheetah research project in Namibia. I’m excited to share more about the latter soon 😁

The Cederberg has remained largely unexplored by me (until now - although we barely scratched the surface). I always drive through the area to get to Namibia but this was the first trip spending some time exploring the mountains. ⠀
⠀
There was an abundance of life which I ashamedly found quite surprising - from multiple groups of klipspringers to big troops of baboons, Verreaux's eagles and what I was convinced was a leopard track. ⠀
⠀
One of my favourite things to do in the mountains is to wait until the sun sets and see the changing colour as the light fades away and turns to night, as we did while snapping this image. @ Cederberg Mountains

These dogs are trained by the to protect wildlife. In May this year year these dogs had saved 45 rhinos from poachers in South Africa 🙌⠀
⠀
Johan van Straan, who is a K9 Master at the collage, said: "The data we collect for this applied learning project, aimed at informing best practice, shows we have prevented approximately 45 rhino from being killed since the free tracking dogs became operational in February 2018. In the areas where the dogs patrol, the success rate is 68% using both on and off leash free tracking dogs, compared to 3-5% with no canine capacity. The game changer has been the free tracking dogs who are able to track at speeds much faster than a human can in terrain where the best human trackers would lose spoor."⠀
⠀
The dogs vary from a beagle to bloodhound and they begin training from birth before working at 18 months old at the Southern African Wildlife Collage in Greater Kruger National Park. ⠀

I’ve had the good fortune of filming across Africa with 🦒 and it has given me a first hand insight into the incredible conservation work they are doing.

Head over to their page to learn more about the challenges giraffe are facing as as species and how Giraffe Conservation Foundation is partnering with African governments and some of the world’s leading institutions to end the silent extinction 🐾

While they are a small team, they are incredibly effective and the proof is in the proverbial pudding! I am proud to be able to tell some of their stories along the way.

Did you know that West African giraffe are more endangered than black rhino⁉️

Definitely one of my favourite short films from the past few years 😁 Let me know what you think‼️

In part because I was able to be a fly on the wall of such incredible team,
In part because it was in Niger,
In part because I was actually able to participate in giraffe capture itself instead of solely focusing on filming,
And wholly because of the scope of the conservation impact.

There is only one population of 600 West African giraffe remaining in the world. To establish a second satellite population, teamed up with the Niger government, Sahara Conservation Fund, and .carter. 8 giraffe travelled for 2 days, over 800km to their new home in Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve - after an absence of almost 50 years.

Digging through some old photos, I found this from one of my first adventures into the world of filming wildlife and conservation efforts.

I was a part of documenting one of the first (now of many) giraffe translocations in Uganda. The aim was to take a seed population across the Nile to the southern part of Murchison Falls National Park. No mean feat to be sure but ultimately successful!

Incredible trip looking back on it and grateful for what its led to 😁🙏

Learn more about the impactful work that are doing alongside to expand the home range of giraffe in Uganda.

Watch .evanantin, and .carter participate in hands-on conservation along with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation team and Uganda Wildlife Authorities.

Seeing the dedication and perseverance of everyone involved, along with the passion that the UWA team shows for their wildlife, gives me a lot of hope for the future of wildlife in Africa!

I’m excited to share this short film about at last!!

Mostly because I think they’re a really effective organisation and the work that Itsaso and her team are doing is incredible. I have the utmost respect for what they’re trying to achieve in really challenging circumstances. Their mantra is rescue, rehabilitate, release - giving these primate orphans a second chance at life with the hope of one day making their way back into their natural habitat.

Visit their IG page to find out more about what they do and .carter ’s Foundation page (ivancarterwca.org) to support their operation.

Why are we so fascinated by chimpanzees? ⠀
⠀
Research into our closest relative continues today and some of the findings are remarkable - a recent study showed that chimpanzee's working memory or short term memory is far superior to that of a human. That's quite a big deal as our memory is something we hold as quite central to our intelligence. ⠀
⠀
A baby chimpanzee is a lot like a human child. In order to develop properly, it requires nurturing and affection to develop emotionally. Furthermore, it learns all the skills necessary for survival from its family. For a chimpanzee that is orphaned, the carers at literally become surrogate mothers to these hairy, sometimes mischievous little children - providing them with the care they need to live a somewhat normal life. ⠀
