Big Old Curved Neck

Snapped this beauty during a birthday drive through Cape Point National Park last year, huge thanks to my amazing driver (and girlfriend) ❤️

Fun fact: an ostrich’s neck is incredibly flexible thanks to its 17–20 cervical vertebrae, letting it bend low to the ground without a problem. Nature’s design at its weird and wonderful best.

Love is in the air! 🐧❤️ This adorable pair of African Penguins is enjoying a little grooming session - because couples that preen together, stay together!

Did you know? African Penguins are monogamous and mate for life, returning to the same nesting site year after year. Now that's true romance!

Blue Crane Details

Why is the blue crane the national bird of South Africa? For many South African communities, the blue crane holds symbolic value. For example, it has been regarded as a bird of peace, grace, and elegance.

"When you bite off more than you can chew, but refuse to admit it." 🐟

Cormorants are such intense fish hunters that they’ll dive up to 150 feet underwater and can stay submerged for over a minute. But here’s the funny part: sometimes they catch fish so big they can’t actually swallow them and instead end up with a fish moustache until they finally figure it out.

Note to self: Turns out, even a moody, overcast day at Spier has a soft spot for good wildlife shots.

Sunbirds are highly active in spring as they flock to blooming flowers for nectar. Their feeding transfers pollen from flower to flower, supporting plant reproduction and biodiversity.

In February, I witnessed the cutest sight—a trio of penguins waddling through the dune succulents, on a mission to some secret spot only they know.

Pretty in Pink 🦩

Flamingos are pink because they eat shrimp... and shrimp are basically nature’s pink food dye - if they snacked on something else, they’d probably be a whole different color!
