FUNGUS : The silent lens killer!

Have you have ever noticed something strange glinting beneath the surface of your lens elements?
It may look like a spiderweb or frost creeping accross your lens.
That eerie substance is lens fungus - a very unwelcome friend in the photography world.

This little monster is more commonly found than you may think.
Every week we receive atleast 2 lenses with the famous fungus fever.

What causes the fungus to thrive?

1. Damp environments

2. Dark spaces

3. Lenses being stored for long periods of time.

Can we remove the fungus from the lens?

Sometimes.
Thats what makes the fungus so tricky.
Sometimes we can clean it as best possible and in good cases remove it completely.
Often, if it has spread too far, it grows in between elements and there is no further way to remove it.
Fungus also eats into the lens coating and will leave fine marks.

That is why it necessary that you take steps to prevent the fungus:

1. Keep a silica gel bag with your lenses and use a dehumidifier in a damp room.

2.Use your lenses often.
The motion of focusing and zooming pushes and pulls air through the lens barrel, allowing moisture to dry out and prevents stagnation.

3. Remove you lenses form storage every view weeks and expose them to natural light.
