Here’s a realistic breakdown of where that actually goes:

Client pays: R5 500

• Put away tax money (VAT + income tax)
R5 500 → ±R4 125

• Payment processing / transaction fees
R4 125 → ±R3 950

• SD cards (1–2 cards for a session, average cost)
±R1 200–R2 400
R3 950 → ±R2 750–R1 550

• Monthly business expenses split across sessions
(storage, gallery delivery, website, subscriptions, editing software, etc.)
±R800
R2 750–R1 550 → ±R1 950–R750

• Fuel + travel to and from session
±R300–R700+ depending on location
R1 950–R750 → ±R1 650–R50

And that’s before:

• equipment upgrades and repairs
• camera bodies and lenses
• computers and hard drives
• insurance
• education and workshops
• advertising and marketing
• time spent shooting
• hours of editing
• emails, planning, culling, gallery delivery, bookkeeping, admin, and many other unpaid hours

Photography is a business — not just “showing up and taking pictures.”

A little re-introduction, now that this page has grown so much 🤍

I am Doré Maritz, the lifestyle and wedding photographer behind Doré Maritz Photography.

As a child, I absolutely loved playing with my mother’s old “mik en druk” camera. As I got older, I somehow always ended up being the one behind the camera taking the photos... maybe because nobody wanted me in them 🤣

In 2023, I took a leap of faith and bought my very first camera. I had absolutely no idea how it all worked, so I started a course just to understand the basics. From there, I taught myself as I went along, learning through every shoot, every mistake, every beautiful moment.

What started as curiosity quickly grew into a passion, and today I can honestly say that I am completely in love with what I do.

I am a lifestyle and wedding photographer, and for me photography is about so much more than just taking pictures. It is about capturing emotion, preserving moments, and telling a story that will be remembered for years to come.

I am beyond thankful for every single client who has had faith in me, trusted me, supported me, and continues to choose me amongst the incredible photographers Bloemfontein has to offer... and wow, there is so much talent here.
