Trained as a photographer 1976 as an apprentice to John Brett Cohen the internationally renowned, prize winning photo - journalist and author. On completion of his apprenticeship George Mandel began freelancing for both the press and magazines. Appointed as the resident photographer for Hair & Beauty magazine, SA Runner & Tri - cycling, Black Salon Africa magazine, and BeautyWorx magazine Jive Mag

azine and was under Contract to Style magazine for 2 years and in 1991 then appointed as Photographic Editor of the now defunct NorthSider News Newspaper.
