The Art of Pausing

​When you spend hours tracking big game through the dense riparian thickets, it is easy to develop tunnel vision. You get so locked into finding the apex predators that your eyes tend to skip over everything else.

​But sometimes, the real value of a drive comes from knowing when to pull the plug, slow down, and appreciate the smaller details.

​After nearly two hours of untangling tracks that we just couldn't reach, we decided to leave the area. That’s when we pulled into an open clearing and found this Striped Kingfisher. It was perched perfectly on a stark, weathered branch, catching a stunning break of golden backlight through the winter sky.

​We stopped the vehicle and just focused on the bird. There is a real reward in those quiet, unexpected moments. A chance to appreciate the incredible variety of the bush while the larger story unfolds in its own time.

​As it turned out, taking the time to sit quietly and photograph this kingfisher is exactly what put us in the right place to hear the distant growls of the pride male moving across the stream. If we had kept rushing, we would have missed the call entirely.
​It’s a reminder that in the wild, you don’t always have to be chasing the horizon to find something remarkable. Sometimes, you just have to stop and look up.

The Family Patrol

​After spending almost two hours tracking the lions, their signs led straight into a dense riverbed where we simply couldn't reach them. We had just decided to leave the area when a Striped Kingfisher caught our attention in an open clearing.

​But right as we settled in to photograph the bird, the distant growl of a lion rolled in from the other side of the stream.

​Everyone sat up instantly to listen. A brief pause of absolute silence followed, broken only by a short vocalization from one of the pride males, before the bush went quiet again. Looking back at my guests, their eyes were filled with hope.

​Obviously, I had to go have a look.

​It took a considerable drive to navigate all the way around the watercourse, but this time our persistence paid off. As we rounded a bend, the entire pride came into view. Both females and all six cubs were strolling down the two-track trail, heading straight towards us, while one of the males anchored the rear far in the distance.
