I think all my clients knows how passionate I am about my newborn photography ..
So here is a very long almost in detail of how it works and the SAFETY around it and why it gets to me ..
🩶🤍🩶🤍🩶
Newborn Photography Is About So Much More Than a Beautiful Picture ..🤍
When you see a beautiful newborn photograph online, it can look effortless.
A sleepy baby, wrapped perfectly, beautiful little details, gorgeous lighting and a dreamy final image…
But what you don’t see is everything that happens behind that photograph.
A newborn session requires knowledge, patience, experience and, most importantly, safety. ❤️
🩶 SAFETY ALWAYS COMES FIRST
Newborns cannot support their own heads, regulate their temperature properly or tell us when they are uncomfortable.
That means a newborn photographer needs to understand:
• Safe handling and positioning
• How to properly support a baby’s head and neck
• Safe wrapping techniques
• Temperature control in the studio
• Which poses are safe and which should NEVER be attempted
• How to recognise when baby is uncomfortable, overstimulated or needs a break
• Safe use of props and posing surfaces
• Constant supervision , baby is never simply left in a pose
Some of the beautiful newborn poses you see online are actually composite images.
This means the final photograph may be made from several images combined together, with a parent or photographer supporting the baby in each photograph.
It may look like baby was safely positioned independently - but that is not necessarily what happened.
SO, WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS DURING A NEWBORN SESSION?
A professional newborn session is not simply:
“Put baby in a basket, take a picture and edit it.”
There is a process.
We allow baby time to settle.
We feed when baby is hungry.
We change when baby needs changing.
We stop when baby becomes unsettled.
We keep baby warm and comfortable.
We carefully position baby.
We use safe supports and techniques.
And sometimes…
👉 WE DON’T GET THE POSE.
And that’s okay.
Because baby’s safety is more important than getting the perfect photograph. ❤️
🤍 AND THEN THERE IS AI…
AI can create absolutely stunning newborn photographs.
And there is nothing wrong with using AI creatively when it is clearly presented as AI-generated artwork.
But there is a serious difference between:
“This is an AI-generated example of what we could create.”
and
“Book me for your newborn session”
when the photographer has never actually photographed or safely posed a newborn in that way.
A beautiful AI image does not teach someone how to safely handle a real newborn.
It doesn’t teach them how to wrap a baby.
It doesn’t teach them how to recognise an unsafe position.
It doesn’t teach them how to support a baby’s head.
And it certainly doesn’t give them the hands-on experience required when a real little human being is lying in front of their camera.
Parents — PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS.
Before booking a newborn photographer, ask:
📌 Are these your own newborn photographs?
📌 Do you have experience photographing newborns?
📌 How do you handle and pose babies safely?
📌 Are your portfolio images real photographs or AI-generated images?
📌 Do you use composite techniques for certain poses?
📌 What happens if my baby doesn’t settle into a particular pose?
You are not being difficult by asking.
You are being a parent. ❤️
A newborn session should never be about forcing a baby into a pose just because we want a certain photograph.
It should be about creating beautiful memories while respecting the tiny person in front of our camera.
Because at the end of the day…
The most beautiful newborn photograph is one where baby was safe, comfortable, loved and cared for every step of the way. 🤍
📸 Real experience. Real babies. Real safety. Real memories.
