“Did I miss the jungle?”

Meet the swallow tailed bee eater that looks like she should be in the jungle. Through the bushes she posed for a moment and then flew off all the while keeping balance in a boat to get the shot. Swipe to see the blood-red eye.

It’s World Elephant Day. Let’s celebrate one of the most admirable species on the planet.

‘Friendship is about finding someone who’s willing to keep meeting every new version of you. ‘

(Not my typical post but today is the start of the second part of big shake up in my life and I was reminiscing. Get a coffee, it’s a long read)

Back when I first moved to the UK, I rented a 3 bed flat with 4 others. I shared a room with a friend I didn’t know that well, it was all we could afford. We were broke, there was no other option and not willing to go back to SA. We lived in a dodgy part of town, think Trainspotting. I am sure we bumped into sick boy once. We had a little black and white TV, it’s all we could afford yet it brought us hours of entertainment. We would lounge on the couch on rainy afternoons in our PJ’s and find everything and nothing to laugh about.

We didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into during those early days. But we were in it together, all the highs and the lows, we faced together. I miss those days.

As I begin my next big adventure, today (in a few hours), I was reminded of what we started together 27 years ago (almost to the day). We met because of photography. Neither of us knew the significance. Now, both of us have changed (for the better), we grew together, even at my worst she is still my biggest champion. I long for those days on the couch but are proud we have come so far

A lasting Friendship isn’t built during the easy years, it’s built by surviving enough life together. And we have done that. We will continue to do that. Even though you aren’t joining me this time around, I will send you my moments and maybe when I am back we can pick a spot on the couch and laugh so hard our stomachs hurt, just like when we did all those years ago.

“Wake up sweetie, the googly animals in the white box are back again.”
“Ag ma, I don’t want to move”

This little zebra was enjoying the mid day sun, peacefully napping as the rest of her herd grazed nearby. Her mom nuzzled her but she was happy to watch us pass by, staying still in the lazy sun.

Sometimes you just need to watch the world go by and let others hurry on their way.

In Etosha, these stripy horses (aka zebras) are scattered as far as you can point a camera. Perfect subjects to practice on when the lions decide the heat is too much.

A recognition is a good start for someone who hasn’t been serious about this for long.

I am honoured to have my zebra faces image recognised in the 2026 Refocus Color Photography Contest. A big thank you to the jury reFocus Awards for selecting my image and motivating me to keep trying.

And I’m incredibly grateful for every person who has supported me, who have connected with my images and encouraged me to keep going with each interaction. Each comment (I love hearing what makes YOU smile), share, repost and like makes a big difference to me. Especially as I am growing on this journey, I am more inspired than ever to see where I can go with this thing called ‘wildlife photography’ ;)

“Here’s looking at you, kid”

I was by myself at a picnic spot in Mokala with the idea to try shoot some b-roll pictures. Apparently its something I need to do, to seem more relatable (anyone else cringe at doing this?). Anyway, as I got out the car along comes my feathered friend to cheer me on. Strangely he wasn’t shy, maybe he thought I was his meal ticket? All other ideas about how I was going to spend my time went out the window after seeing his face. I pulled out my camera, sat on the ground, and allowed this yellow-billed hornbill to dance around me as he investigated everything.

He came close enough that I could capture his beautiful long eye-lashes. His boldness was unusual. I wonder if other people had fed him and that is what he was expecting from me. Sadly for him (well that is what he would feel), I didn’t have any hornbill food. Well who carries insects in their pockets for such occasions? He didn’t stay long however his inspection of me was more amusing and better fun that shooting pictures of myself.

“Come on, following me”

Big brother decided to walk off. These 3 looked at each other, looked at us, looked back at where he’d disappeared but didn’t follow. They were caught between the pull of following their big brother and the comfort of staying exactly where they were and playing. They had each other to be brave, they didn’t need to go anywhere.

They were curious, weary and a little mischievous. This was one of those moments that last. We had come by this spot earlier in the day and you could only see shapes in the bushes and there were too many other vehicles around. Later on, it was only us and I think that is why these cubs were comfortable coming out. They now had the space to play, and play they did.
