What do these animals have in common?
The American crocodile, bald eagle, wood stork, and American alligator were all once listed as endangered species in the United States. Thanks to conservation efforts, habitat protection, and the Endangered Species Act, their populations were given a second chance.
Today is Endangered Species Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the plants and animals at risk of extinction and recognizing the importance of protecting biodiversity.
Passed in 1973, the Endangered Species Act helps protect threatened and endangered wildlife and the habitats they depend on. Over the years, it has played a major role in the recovery of iconic species like the bald eagle and American alligator, proving that conservation efforts can make a real difference.
These species remind us that recovery is possible when people choose to protect wildlife and the environments they call home.

Caught this banded watersnake in the middle of frog lunch. Not the easiest thing for some to watch, but a perfect example of how predators help keep ecosystems in balance. Completely harmless to people, banded watersnakes are often mistaken for venomous species, but they’re just doing their job. Every role matters out here!!

Happy Easter! This Easter bunny can swim. Marsh rabbits thrive in wetlands, munching on grasses and hiding in thick marshes. Their big hind feet make them excellent paddlers, letting them slip through water like little marsh ninjas!

Crocodilians are incredibly resilient, this American crocodile likely lost part of its lower jaw from territorial fighting, yet it’s still cruising the waters of the Everglades, a testament to just how tough these reptiles are.

Wood storks, great egrets, and anhingas all commonly raise their young in dense breeding colonies.
Many wading birds often nest over water inhabited by alligators. The presence of alligators reduces access for terrestrial predators, increasing nest success.
Which baby bird do you find to be the most cute?

Flamingos? Try again… meet the Roseate Spoonbill, one of the most eye-catching wading birds out there. That bright pink color actually comes from what they eat, things like shrimp and other small aquatic crustaceans that are full of natural pigments. Instead of stabbing at prey like herons, spoonbills sweep their uniquely shaped bills side-to-side through shallow water, snapping them shut the second they feel something to eat.

This young American crocodile is soaking up the sun in the mangroves, and it’s not just for the vibes! Like all reptiles, crocodiles rely on the sun for thermoregulation to control their body temperature. By basking in the sun, this little guy speeds up digestion, boosts energy, and gets ready to hunt, while the mangroves provide protection and a steady food supply as it grows into one of the ecosystem’s top predators.

Who said dinosaurs were actually extinct? The Wood Stork is the only native stork species in the United States, and with its featherless head, heavy downcurved bill, and unmistakably prehistoric profile, it’s easy to see why they feel like living relics of the past. Often found in wetlands, these birds use a specialized tactile feeding technique, sweeping their open bills through shallow water and snapping shut on prey. Ancient in appearance, but highly adapted for modern ecosystems.
