Treading Water
Kendyl Egert, a sophomore psychology major at Texas Woman’s University, navigates the competing demands of college life as both an international student from Canada and a member of the university’s artistic swimming team. Her daily routine is shaped by early morning practices, classes and the discipline required to succeed as a collegiate athlete, all while maintaining a full academic load. Beyond athletics and academics, Egert also works to sustain a social life, building friendships and a support system far from home. Still uncertain about her long-term career path, she reflects a broader reality faced by many college students balancing ambition with unanswered questions about the future. Egert’s experience highlights the intersection of identity, responsibility and personal growth, offering insight into how students manage expectations, cultivate belonging and adapt to life’s competing pressures.
Big thank you to Kendyl for being the subject of my project and her many friends and teammates who allowed me to photograph them.
