Pandora. But it's real. All of it. ✨️🌿🛢

I remember watching the first Avatar movie and because I loved this magical, incredible, otherworldly planet, I also remember that I left the movie angry.. Why are humans like this? Why are we destroying the very thing that keeps us all alive?

Three years ago, Ecuadorians did something almost no one does. They voted to leave the oil in the ground.

59% said yes: keep the crude under Yasuní, one of the most biodiverse places on Earth - you're looking at moments from this exact place 🐒

The court gave the government one year to shut it down. That year ended in August 2024. Today the wells are still pumping, tens of thousands of barrels a day.

I spent a week in this forest with the Waorani. For them it isn't a "national park" or "wilderness". It's kitchen, pharmacy, school and home. Next door live peoples who chose to have no contact with our world at all. They never got a vote. They just live with whatever comes out of the ground, in harmony, with Eywa, if you will 🌳

In August, Waorani walked through the court again, three years after the vote, demanding the one thing an entire country had already promised them. A democracy said stop. The oil kept flowing.

If a referendum can be ignored this quietly, what exactly is protected?

Share this. Don't let it go quiet please.

First time seeing a transparent butterfly 😳

12 hours by bus. 2 by car. 1 more in another car. Then 2 hours on foot into the forest.

That's how far it is to the place Minta grew up. He knows every trail, every plant, every sound in it. A few kilometers further in live people who chose never to make contact with the outside world.

After a few days here, I understood why. I came to learn about the jungle. Mostly, I unlearned. That I need a map. That more is better. That this forest is ours to take from.

Share this post if you've unlearned one thing from it as well 🌿

And suddenly the world feels ... alright? ✨️🌿

I'm not gonna lie - this all looks very romantic, fun and full of adventure. And while it certainly is all of the above, it's also rough, extremely humid and full of mosquitoes. It's vast and wild, not always easy to navigate, and sometimes it's not even easy to find enough food.

But that's not what I mean.

This jungle still feels untouched - but only this part. And only for now. Because there's one more thing it is: endangered.

We are cutting down rainforests, drilling for oil and destroying the very ecosystems that sustain us. Taking away the homes of countless animals and threatening indigenous communities who have lived with and protected these forests for generations.

So while Minta () invited us to experience and share the exciting parts of the jungle, he also made us understand just how crucial it is to protect it.

And, more importantly, how we can help him do that. Drop your questions ans thoughts in the comments!

Honestly, this year was a surprise package and I took life as it came. I’m grateful I traveled the way I did – it created countless memories, introduced me to so many new people, and took me to places I’ll carry with me for a long time.

Especially China, Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar (which was a bit of a secret unless you followed along on Polarsteps 👀) left a massive mark this year, in the best way possible.

Anzeige | I’ve been using for over 10 years now, and this new Unpacked feature is such a beautiful way to look back on a year of travel. Voila, my 2025, unpacked. I could add 20 more slides but I’ll try to catch up with posting more soon!

If you’re already planning your trips for 2026, it’s worth checking out. Feel free to follow me there as well:

And if you’re already using the app, definitely create your own Unpacked: it just launched this week.

Tag and me, I’ll have a look ✌️

So, thank you. For your continuous support, your patience and wonderful messages every time I haven't posted in a while. Here's to 2026, to great health, pure hearts and the best version of ourselves 🫶
