Acrylic, ink, and mixed media on canvas.

This comes out of the same place as my photography—stripping things back and letting the image carry the weight.

I love the contrast of her pale skin where it’s unhidden by the red fabric. Censored edit of Dasha Usova.

I went back and counted today, and I've done over 150 photo shoots with over 100 models. So I decided to pick a favorite from each shoot to post each week (we'll see if I'm actually able to remember each week, but I'll do my best).

This was one of my very first shoots (in 2009). I was fortunate enough to work with the lovely Alyssa. We shot in my living room in front of a cheap backdrop with fixed lighting on my Canon Rebel XSi (my first DSLR, entry level). I've upgraded all of those things over the years, but despite not having the greatest equipment, I will always love how the photos from this shoot came out.

For Brian Eno fans, this is an interesting interview. I particularly like his answer to: "Why does art exist? Why do we have aesthetic preferences?" Eno says: "What happens when you go look at a painting you’ve never seen before? What I think happens is that when you look at that picture, you’re seeing it in the context of all the other pictures you’ve ever seen. When you go and look at something new, what you’re saying is, “What’s different about this experience?” In many instances, there won’t be anything different, in which case you’re not that interested. But if you can look at it and say, “That’s more angular. That’s fuzzier. That’s much more this, much more that” — we’re very good at understanding differences in feeling within our own long narrative of looking at pieces of work. But what does it mean, for example, when a picture is scratchier than another? You read that as, This is urgent. The artist didn’t have time to make it pretty. We read messages that don’t have a text quality to them, and we still pick up on the ideas that make them different. Or take Bauhaus [German design style, not the band]. When Bauhaus comes along, it’s saying, “We no longer think of the world as divided into beautiful things and functional things.” That’s a philosophical position about the world. Art, even when it’s nonnarrative, makes those kinds of points all the time."

“I’m absolutely fascinated by this question, because I think I have an answer, and I don’t think it has ever been well answered.”

This is a really interesting edit of . It started out as a simple mosaic, but ended up as a full-on tapestry. I began adding snippets from other pieces of art, and now there are over 20 subtly embedded in this image (even from the Mona Lisa!). Can you find them all? There's Klimt, da Vinci, Banksy, Michelangelo, Picasso, Basquait, and many more! Even a few Easter eggs of my own. Happy hunting!
