IN HIS OWN WORDS: GRESHAM FIREFIGHTER SHARES HIS THOUGHTS ON BEING PART OF OREGON'S FIRE ALL-BLACK ENGINE COMPANY
"This one is for the history books!â €
â €
The fire service as a profession has been around for over a hundred years. And even though there is a rich history of black firefighters serving in their communities, the early to mid-1900’s still saw things like segregated fire stations and entire geographical areas with little to no black firefighters at all. To this day, black firefighters make up only around 8% of the national workforce and even less than that hold leadership positions. ⠀
â €
Fast forward to about a [year] ago, and the agency I work for did something that’s never been done in the history of Oregon’s fire service (to my knowledge) and I’m incredibly proud to have taken part in it. Behold, Oregon’s first all-black engine company.⠀
â €
I got hired two years ago with Josh (far left), but leaders like Jeff Hairston (pictured in the middle), as well as leaders in other neighboring agencies, have been paving the way for our generation over the last decade+. We serve with pride and honor and will continue to open the doors for whoever may want to follow in our footsteps. So cheers to the greatest job I’ve ever known with the greatest people I’ve had the privilege to meet. 🍻"
