We just returned from a little ride over the Alpine Loop. Diane insisted that I get my camera out of storage so I could create a few more memories.

Here's a photo I made at the request of my mountain climbing daughter, Stacy. All eight of these notable peaks are on the east side of Utah Valley and within 50 miles of her home in Payson.

This photograph is just to grab your attention. I have been making photographic images of nature landscapes for more than 60 years. I admit to doing some minor editing with many of them like removing telephone wires so as to render them as "The Art of God" without human intervention. Sometimes I have even replaced a boring sky with something more dramatic or "fixed" an image to correct artifacts introduced by my camera or lens.. However, I consider every image of the landscape that I have made as being a true representation of how it actually existed or could have existed.

Now, I am amazed and disheartened by the proliferation of images that are presented as photography but exist only in someone's computer, having been created with AI (Artificial Intelligence). They are usually so garish and unreal that they are an insult to "The Art of God."

What is even more disconcerting to me is the positive reaction offered by so many gullible viewers, some even giving credit to God for creating what is actually a deliberate scam.

Most of them are so blatantly phony that anyone with just a modicum of discernment would recognize them as fictitious representations of the landscape.

In a way, it makes me a bit happy to be in my 90's and can step away from most of this foolishness.

It is so disheartening to think that in a country of more than 340 million citizens, in just a few months, we will be faced with a viable choice of only two deeply flawed candidates to lead us as our president. One of these two will undoubtedly be the leader of our beloved United States of America for the next four years. How did we end up with only two unsatisfactory candidates out of a pool of millions of us? In utter despair, many will choose not to vote at all, vote for the “lesser of two evils,” or lazily vote their party affiliation. These are feeble choices at best and not worthy of a good citizen.

So, what should we do? How should we vote? For me it is simple. I will disregard the unsatisfactory personal characteristics of both candidates. I will rely on the policies that they advocate and have implemented that align most closely with my values and have resulted in the best outcome during the past eight years where we gave each of them four years to lead us.

A few of my favorite people dropped in today to remind me that I've only got 10 years to go to reach the century mark. I think that it's the 100 yard dash they were talking about.

Some of the most colorful animals on earth live under the sea. This is a small coral bommie that is covered with a variety of soft corals. It is also home to a colony of small reef fish. I can't help thinking this would make a great puzzle, so I have added it to our website where it can actually be made in to a puzzle! What a great Christmas gift, huh? All our fine art images can be printed as a puzzle, magnets, acrylic trays, and more. Bordering the northeastern corner of Yellowstone National Park, the Beartooth Mountains in Montana encompass one of the largest land masses in the United States above 10,000 feet. Consisting of Pre-Cambrian granite peaks and plateaus, mountain meadows and lakes that were shaped by thousands of years of glacial movement, they provide many opportunities for nature landscape photography.

Of the many photographs that I've seen of this area, only a very few include the particularly pointed and rugged peak from which the area derives its name. This image shows the "bear's tooth" in right center of this photograph, a bit small from this vantage point so far away, but unmistakably there to provide the name for this rugged landscape.

The legendary photographer, Ansel Adams, was a strong proponent of “previsualization” in making great images. Others, however, just tune in to their environment at the moment and make great photographs of what just happens at that moment in time.

Before making this photograph I had previsualized a scene that included great crashing waves against huge boulders on the beach set against a backdrop of lush mountain greenery and the developing colorful sky in the sweet light of sunset.

As I was walking on the beach looking for my photograph, I glanced down at these small colorful pebbles lying in some brackish water and realized that what I was looking for was nothing more than a massive conglomeration of what lie at my feet so . . . . I photographed them. Unexpectedly, this photograph turned out to be a popular item in my portfolio. This image is coupled with a poem in my book, “Visual Verse.”

The lesson for me here, I guess, is that any photographic methodology is fine but don’t let “previsualization preempt what ”just happens.”

The Barrel Cactus blooms in April with bright yellow flowers that appear only on the top of the cactus. A mature barrel cactus can store as much as 100 gallons of water and can live as long as 100 years.

Although they are very interesting and invite close inspection, this cactus must be approached with extreme caution. If a puncture wound to the skin is deep enough to draw blood, antibiotics may be needed and could take several months to heal. They are one of the most dangerous cacti in the desert.

When a “found” image comes along without effort and planning, it’s like a gift and often results in the best photographic result. In this case we had to park in an overflow campground in Banff National Park because the regular campgrounds were full. This scene was adjacent to our camping spot and presented itself to me without any effort on my part other than setting my camera on a tripod and pushing the button. “Free is good!”

Balanced Rock in Arches National Park and its supporting cast looks much different in silhouette after a beautiful sunset. Some of the most colorful and outstanding photographs are available after the sun goes down or just before it rises.

Balanced Rock in Arches National Park in Utah is a very popular destination attracting more than 800,000 visitors each year. There used to be a much smaller version of this sandstone formation with the informal name "chip off the old block" that stood just a few feet away west of Balanced Rock. It fell during the winter of 1975/1976. So, even though these marvelous and picturesque jewels seem to be unchanged to human perception for hundreds of years, they do eventually collapse. That will surely be the fate of Balanced Rock someday, perhaps even in our lifetime.

In summer it is difficult to make a good image of Balanced Rock without people in it. In winter, however, the contrast between red rock and snow renders it even more striking, which makes for an outstanding image, worthy of publication or as a fine art print. Just behind Balanced Rock is Turret Arch and the Windows section of Arches, framed by the beautiful snow-capped LaSal Mountains.
