Congratulations, Greg! This has been a long time coming. I know the hard work you’ve put into being permitted to rehab bears again. Keep up your good work!

If you drive in bear country, please slow down and keep an eye out for the little ones. Vehicle strikes are an unfortunately significant cause of cub mortality.

It’s tough enough for bear cubs. Please don’t make it harder for them.

Your BOTD. Bear of the day.

Stop touching me! I’m not touching you! You’re touching me!

Here’s an oldie but goodie from my archives. I was cleaning off some hard drives and found a folder with hours of trailcam footage like this. At times, being a digital hoarder has advantages, but when it’s video, you are always looking for larger and larger hard drives.

Here’s another one from my new camera trap rig. Most of the bears come from the direction facing the camera, but as is evident from my last post, not always. So it’s extra exciting when they walk right into the sweet spot like this.

One of the big challenges of camera trapping is visualizing the image before the subject arrives. The camera has to be set on manual focus. There’s usually so little light, the camera won’t capture an image in time if it’s hunting for a focus spot in the dark. So, you have to pick a focus point with no subject, hoping the animal walks right into that spot. It’s a lot of trial and error, but so worth it when it works out right.

Well, that’s a bummer.

Last week, I built a new camera trap enclosure. With camera trapping, you never know whether all the work that goes into building an enclosure will pay off until you actually put the box in the field.

I think this one is working quite nicely if I do say so myself. The first time this box is in the wild, and there are dozens of awesome images. When I checked the card, I almost couldn’t believe my eyes. Or my luck.

I did a little walk-through video on how I did the build, and hopefully I’ll have that up on YouTube before long. It’s not the easiest process in the world, but when it works, the images are unlike anything else I can get when I’m behind the camera myself. And I’ll be posting more from this card pull in the coming days.
