After 20(ish) years of being a Subaru guy... I’m going back to my roots and picked up a truck yesterday. I got my first Toyota when I was 14. Like so many kids in the 80’s, I fell in love with them after seeing Marty’s black 1985 truck in Back to the Future. Mine was a tan 1982 longbed that I drove until I graduated high school. I guess I’ve come full circle and finally got a black one like the one I was lusting over when I was 10 years old. Should be a fun project to build and get dialed in for camping.

Piece I was able to finish over the Memorial Day weekend - I was commissioned to make a commemorative mallet and stand with a special piece of wood. I was sent a piece of teak from the original deck of the USS Missouri to design and incorporate into a gift for an officer promoting to Commander. For those unaware, the USS Missouri is the battleship site where the surrender of the Empire of Japan took place, effectively putting an end to World War II in 1945. As the ship was restored over the years, wood from the deck was slowly replaced and this was part of the original deck. I inlaid the teak into white oak (another wood renowned in naval history - see the USS Constitution). It was a challenging build knowing there was no room for error and I couldn’t start over if I missed a cut - especially since parts of the wood were a little p***y - but overall I’m pretty pleased with the result. Pretty cool having. Piece of history come through the shop.

This one might be my favorite so far. Hate to let it go, but it is going to make someone’s Christmas a little bit merr...

Another basket weave board in the books. This one is made from cherry and sapele and is about 18.5” x 14.5” x 2”. I took a little extra time to film the process and will try my hand at editing a how-to video for those that are interested to go along with the walkthrough that’s already available on the website. .
