A magical morning in Iceland.

Mornings like this can be extremely hard to come by, particularly in Iceland, so I really cherish them!

There was an amazing colour range in this flow-banded Rhyolite. I’m making even more of an effort to focus on foregrounds going forward. Grand scenic photography can be a little impersonal if you end up shooting “just the view”. That’s going to remain a part of my process, but where possible I’m going to spend more time searching for interesting subjects at my feet.

Overcast flat evening light and strong midday sunshine. Not usually the conditions to be making mountain photos in, but such is the nature of Iceland’s graphic landscape, it seems almost any light can be the right light!

The second image does make careful use of a polariser to control the glare on the water and sand.

A glorious sunrise on the first morning of the first Iceland trip.

The nature of backpacking trips is you have to tolerate some bad weather, and that is particularly true in Iceland. But I particularly like starting a trip with a bang because it really helps to get through those tough days!

Needless to say photographing mornings like this doesn’t present a huge amount of challenge if you can operate a camera competently. Iceland is a simple, graphic landscape and if you combine that with sublime conditions then there are countless images to be made. Although I spent some time photographing the view, I also played around with some more complex foregrounds. This basalt is perhaps a little jarring against the placid landscape beyond, but it also brings context to the landscape.

Maelifell is commonly photographed from helicopters, planes and with drones. The aerial perspective certainly has its merits, but ground based photography offers greater variety, more relatable imagery and greater scope for individuality.

We spent one surreal day of our trip walking across black sand desert. Although these might not be the most dramatic images of the hike, they do at least give a flavour of the landscape.

Landscapes in construction. I had the strange thought walking past this fading glacier that we were likely the first people to walk on that specific ground, such is the pace of melting. Whilst it was a somber sight, it was also beautiful and chaotic in a way that is hard to describe (even with the camera!)

Since a few people have told me that they didn't realise I had a book I obviously need to market more!

“The Great Wilderness” is a luxury hardback photography book of Scotland’s most remote mountain area. It shows the Highlands during ephemeral moments of light, weather, and seasonal change. The images were captured over a 4-year period backpacking through the mountain areas of Fisherfield, Dundonnell and Letterewe. Alongside the images are stories of adventure in the mountains.

I have 283 copies of the original 1700 remaining, so don't hang about too long!
