I don't charge my clients upfront. I believe people should always have a choice, especially on vacation. A photo shoot should be fun, and the time leading up to it even more so. Rejections are extremely rare, and I don't particularly worry when they happen.
But then a client from Poland texts me this morning. He wanted to propose to his girlfriend that evening. And I'm supposedly going to accidentally film it.
So he says, "It's going to rain this evening, so I won't propose, we're canceling the shoot." I look out the window, and there's sunshine and a clear, blue sky. How does he know it's going to rain at 5 pm?
We're at the beginning of the rainy season now, but it rains at night. And if it does appear during the day, it ends just as abruptly and quickly. How can you know for sure that it's going to rain at this exact time? And it would be wise to reschedule rather than cancel. Unless, of course, you've changed your mind about getting married. Okay, no problem, I canceled the shoot and wished them a good vacation.
In the evening, I looked up at the sky and saw such beauty. Can you imagine what a magnificent sunset on the beach, gleaming in the waves? And for the first time in my life, I regretted that the client had canceled the photo shoot. It woud have been a simply stunning marriage proposal. In the orange rays of a gorgeous sunset.
That's the magic of the island.
You can make plans, check the forecast, doubt, cancel, reschedule, come up with backup plans. And then the sun simply sets behind the horizon, the sky turns golden, the sea reflects every ray, and for a few minutes the whole world becomes a stage set for the most important moment.
Sometimes beauty doesn't ask if you're ready.
It just comes.
