This is a super chat on the topic of the movie Civil War with some real-life conflict photographers.

Personally, I enjoyed the film, but I certainly didn't find every scene believable. Its aim of shining a light on conflict photographers and the dangerous work they do, though, is a noble one, and director Alex Garland should be commended for that.

I have deep-rooted opinions of my own on this type of photography, so the film was never going to open my eyes to anything new, but if one person pays more attention to war photography and appreciates the aim of the majority of those that choose it as a vocation as a result of seeing this film, the world might just be a little bit better.

Did you see the film? What did you think?

Alex Garland’s 'Civil War' casts a dark vision of a United States at war with itself. It's a disturbingly realistic scenario shown through the eyes of some u...

It was a mission to get here, believe me, but more than worth the hour-long ride to see the incense stick production outside Hanoi. Everything there had a pick hue because of the incense dust – even the local dog was pink 🩷 Imagine the whiff if you dropped a match here 😱

Incense stick making is a trade that is more than a century old. These guys make it throughout the village, and can custom make the fragrances that the bamboo sticks are coated with. The colour is a dye, and an aromatic paste is added to produce the various fragrances.

What a trip wandering around this place. I came to this site in 2007, and there was nothing here except a few glistening new sculptures by the lake. In the years that followed, this water park – a Seaworld of sorts – was built and opened but clearly fell on hard times. I don't think I've been to a more surreal place. What memories remain here? Who knows? It was fascinating to be there 👻😱

The basket boats of Vietnam have become something of a tourist ride in Hội An. You can hop in for a tour of the coconut forest not far from town, and be taken for a spin – literally if your boatman is skilled enough. They'll take you on a wild 360 vomotron, just when you thought it was going to be a leisurely paddle through the lush greenery. It's jet-boating, Viet style 🌀🇻🇳

My second trip to Vietnam has been a long time coming, but I'm so happy to be back here. It's as wonderful as I remember from almost 10 years ago, and having alongside me this time has made it all the more magical. We've still got a lot more exploring to do, so standby for more shots from land, sea and air 📸

We're very close to showtime for the and Stadium Australia is looking pretty as a picture 😍 It's been 23 years since I was here preparing to cover the Sydney Olympic Games, and here I am again, coming full circle to cover another huge event, this time with FIFA. It's been a long complicated journey, but I couldn't be happier. I'm so blessed and eternally grateful for the opportunities Australia has gifted me since moving here in 1999. This tournament is going to be incredible, and I can't wait for the first kick of a ball on 20 July.

The hilariously unfinished National Monument of Scotland 🏛️ It was intended to be a copy of the Parthenon in Athens, serving as a memorial to Scots who had died in the Napoleonic Wars of 1803-1815. The foundation stone was laid in 1822, but with only half the money needed to complete the project raised, they only got the initial pillar built 😅 Despite a few proposals to finish it, the structure remains on Calton Hill beautifully incomplete, and serves as a superb frame during epic sunrises such as this 🌄

📸 Nagakin Capsule Tower, 1972.

I'm sure like anyone lucky enough to have seen this building, I was saddened to hear of its impending deconstruction this past week. It's such an iconic structure in the Ginza district of Tokyo, and will be sorely missed by many 💔

Designed and built in 1972 by Kisho Kurokawa, the capsules were supposed to be switched out every 25 years, but that has proved too expensive and undertaking over the years, and sadly the building has now fallen into a state of terminal disrepair. I can tell you, as a fellow 50 year old, things start to break and you need all the love and affection you can get to stay upright 😅

It's sad to see buildings like this falling victim to wrecking balls all over the world. There is a far-right political movement doing its best to wipe brutalist architecture and its metabolist cousins from the face of the planet, so I can only hope there is an equally determined movement working to preserve such buildings. I'm a huge fan of them. They're so wonderfully striking and unusual, and can really transport you to another place and time.

Farewell, Nagakin. May your memory be forever cherished 🙏🏻
