Two months ago, we were in northern Vietnam.

The rice terraces were flooded, ready for planting.

Fields being turned by buffalo and hand.

Fires clearing the edges of the paddies.

Smoke drifting across the valleys at dusk.

May is not the season most photographers come for.

But it has its own light. Its own rhythm.

In September, the same terraces will turn gold for the harvest.

A completely different landscape. A completely different mood.

It sits quietly on the east coast, far from the tourist trail.

A Muslim fishing village surrounded by rice fields.

Buffaloes crossing the paddy at dusk.

Young men in white on bicycles.

Fishermen heading out before sunrise.

People here want to know where you're from.

What you think of their village.

Whether you'll come back.

The kind of curiosity that makes you put the camera down for a moment
and just talk.

This is the Sri Lanka that doesn't make it onto postcards.

And for photographers, that's exactly the point.

Most people never make it to Jaffna.

They head south. The beaches, the temples, the tourist trail.

Jaffna is something else entirely.

The north of Sri Lanka feels like a different country.

Tamil culture, Hindu temples with striped walls reaching for the sky,

women in bright saris on quiet streets,

men on bicycles carrying banana leaves home.

No high-rises. No rush. No performance.

Just a city going about its life, slowly, on its own terms.

We spent time here, walking, watching, photographing.

And leaving with pictures that felt like they couldn't have been taken anywhere else.

Every bus is a moving piece of art.

Hand-painted, decorated, lit up with neon inside.

Every face at the window tells a different story.
We spent time in these stands.

Not rushing through, not just passing by.

Waiting. Watching. Camera ready.
This is where Sri Lanka shows itself most freely.

6:30am. The light is already golden.

Negombo's fish market is roaring.
Baskets swinging on bamboo poles.

Nets pulled in from the sea, still full.

Egrets darting between fishermen, waiting for their share.
Everything moves fast here, hands sorting, water splashing, colours flashing in the early light.
This is not a quiet morning.

It's one of the most alive places we visit on this journey.

Phnom Penh before the heat sets in.

A local friend, a back alley near the central market, and a street breakfast we didn't plan.

This is how we found these lanes — not on a map, not on a tour itinerary. Just following the smell of coffee and the sound of the city waking up.

Monks passing between the stalls. A couple on a motorbike, caught for a second in the light. A woman selling vegetables, not looking up.

Phnom Penh doesn't perform for you. It just gets on with it.

And if you're quiet enough, patient enough, it lets you in.

It doesn't appear on most Cambodia itineraries. No entrance fees. No souvenir stalls. Just a dirt road leading into a village that time forgot to rush.

Houses on stilts so tall they seem to touch the sky. Kids on bicycles weave between the wooden pillars. Fishermen and their families mending nets in the shade.

Nobody was waiting for us with a smile and a souvenir. They were just living.

And that's exactly when the best photographs happen.

I almost didn’t go in.

A beautiful modernist building, three floors, peeling paint and old shutters. Something about it pulled us through the door.

Up the stairs. Light cutting through the lattice walls. The kind of light that makes you stop breathing.

At the top, a rooftop, a family, laundry drying in the wind. And this man.

He looked at us the way people do when they know exactly who they are. We didn’t share a language. We didn’t need one.

This is what Battambang does. It hides its best moments behind ordinary doors.

And this is what we do together, walk through those doors, slowly, with our cameras and our curiosity.
