Two more of my favourite shots taken on my trip to South Africa earlier this summer. These were taken in iSimangaliso wetland reserve, an area with one of the highest hippo densities in the whole of Africa, so many in fact that in the nearest town, St. Lucia, these giant animals actually roam the streets at night.

I have been recently practicing a new technique, high-key black and white. In order to do this you need a light, relatively plain background, such as an overcast sky, which you can then expose your subject against. By converting the image to black and white you can really bring out the details of your subject. I really like how minimalistic the shots turn out and they almost look like they've been taken in a studio. Here are a few of these shots I've taken this year, let me know what you think.

One of my photography highlights from my trip to California in Easter was shooting these tiny western sandpipers. Lying on my stomach, in order to shoot them from as low an angle as possible, the way they rapidly scuttled along the sand meant capturing photo's of them was quite the challenge, all be it quite fun. I converted the images to black and white as I thought it really brought out the intricate patterns of the beautiful little species.

Hmong farmers harvesting the years rice crop just outside Sa Pa in Northern Vietnam. The country is one of the largest rice producers in the world, resulting in large areas being covered in beautiful rice paddies and terraces.

Three generations of a Hmong family in Tuyen Quang province.
I think the clothing of the different family members is a great representation of how westernisation has occurred in the country, even in the most remote of areas, with the grandmother wearing a full traditional outfit, compared to her granddaughter in jeans.

Can't believe it's been over a year since my trip to Thac Ba reservoir, the largest lake in Vietnam, as part of a survey for the Wildlife Conservation Society. It was one of the most stunning places I've ever been to, with the serene waters being seemingly never-enough. Definitely one of Vietnam’s many hidden gems.
