Stilt houses are a particular type of architecture known in the Mai Chau valley due to the flooding that is necessary to keep the rice fields fertile. The main living area is raised up leaving these shaded patios for communal dining and visiting. We were able to eat a traditional feast hosted by the lovely lady in this photo.

A close up of our sweet grandma teaching us is warranted. She is sporting a look of status with her blackened teeth. This comes from chewing the betel nut, similar to how to***co is chewed. It was believed that it cleaned the teeth when oral hygiene wasn't really a thing so the black teeth symbolized a clean mouth (not true as there is a strong link to oral cancers). While it is in some local specialties, betel nut is known as a stimulant and also has psychoactive qualities.

Kitty break! I was really surprised as to how many people had dogs and cats in Vietnam. Obviously in the countryside there is more room, but people don't live in big homes there so I didn't think we'd see as many. This little guy was noteworthy for his pose and how well he match his bike throne.
