Three Islands Media congratulates the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands on another successful Freedom Week celebration.

Across the Territory, communities gathered to honor the history, resilience, and cultural traditions that continue to shape Virgin Islands identity. From the celebrations on St. John to the commemorative events throughout St. Croix, residents and visitors experienced a week filled with education, performance, remembrance, and community pride.

We extend special recognition to David Berg, Julianna Berry, Positive Nelson, the Ten Sleepless Knights, and the Keeping Masquerading Traditions Alive initiative for their contributions to this year’s observances. The program at the Dorsch Cultural Activity Center brought together numerous cultural and heritage organizations for an evening of scholarship, storytelling, music, dance, and traditional performance, highlighting the living traditions that continue to connect generations of Virgin Islanders.

Thank you to every artist, educator, musician, volunteer, cultural bearer, and community partner whose work ensured that Freedom Week remained a vibrant expression of our shared history and our collective future.

Virgin Islands Freedom Week | June 26 to July 3, 2026

Freedom Week commemorates the 178th anniversary of the 1848 Emancipation of enslaved Africans in the former Danish West Indies. Throughout the week, organizations across St. Croix are inviting the community to explore our history through research, music, movement, walking tours, masquerade, storytelling, and cultural celebration.

Join David A. Berg and Juliana Berry for an evening of archival discovery featuring rare nineteenth-century Virgin Islands photographs, historical research, and conversations about preserving our shared history.

Keeping Masquerade Traditions Alive
Dorsch Cultural Activity Center

Explore the history of Virgin Islands masquerading from the 1852 colonial suppression of Christmas traditions through the community-led revival that continues today. The evening features storytelling, drumming, movement, historical reflection, and conversations with cultural bearers.

Today, Three Islands Media visited CMCArts in Frederiksted, where a collaboration with the Caribbean Soil Museum demonstrated how interdisciplinary learning can transform the way we understand the Virgin Islands.

The experience connected soil science, ecology, history, agriculture, economics, and the visual arts, illustrating that education extends beyond memorizing facts. When learners engage through observation, creativity, and inquiry, they develop a deeper understanding of the landscapes that have shaped our islands for generations.

One of the most compelling discoveries was learning that approximately 60% of the U.S. Virgin Islands is covered by nutrient-rich Mollisols, among the world’s most productive agricultural soils. This scientific insight helps explain St. Croix’s agricultural history while encouraging conversations about sustainable farming, environmental stewardship, food security, and economic resilience.

Experiences like these also strengthen the Orange Economy by creating cultural and educational attractions that benefit artists, scientists, educators, students, families, and visitors. They expand opportunities for heritage tourism, support local creative industries, encourage lifelong learning, and reinforce the Virgin Islands as a destination where culture, science, and innovation intersect.

Congratulations to CMCArts and the Caribbean Soil Museum for creating a program that reminds us our greatest classroom is often beneath our feet.

The soundtrack of Freedom Week has long been carried by the music of the Ten Sleepless Knights, and among its dedicated members is Edgie Christian, whose musicianship has helped sustain one of the Virgin Islands’ most enduring cultural traditions.

Freedom Week, observed each year leading to July 3, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Africans in the former Danish West Indies in 1848 while honoring the generations who have continued the work of preserving Virgin Islands culture, history, and identity.

Throughout this year’s Freedom Week activities, the music of the Ten Sleepless Knights once again provided the rhythmic foundation for community gatherings, commemorative events, and cultural celebrations. Their performances reminded audiences that Quelbe, the official music of the U.S. Virgin Islands, remains a living tradition that continues to connect generations through storytelling, memory, and movement.

Three Islands Media is honored to document the people whose collective work keeps these traditions alive for future generations.
