The Hotel Carrasco began in 1912, however, building was suspended for 9 years due to WWI. It was finally completed and opened in 1921. Still operating today under Sofitel management, it is an Official Historical heritage landmark in Uruguay.

The Plush-crested Jay (Cyanocorax chrysops) is a striking, social bird from central South America, known for its dark blue back, black bib, pale yellow underparts, and a short, stiff crest of feathers. It can mimic not only other birds but also other animals!!

The Leonel Viera bridge, linking the cities of Punta del Este and La Barra, is what is known as a “stressed ribbon” bridge. Cool to look at, but pretty freaky to drive because you cannot see anything until you get to the top of the curve. This would NEVER work in a highly traveled area. It was a bit unnerving.

Casa Pueblo, Punta Ballena, Uruguay. Built by Uruguayan artist, Carlos Páez Vilaró, who lived in it most of his life. It was designed to evoke impressions of Santorini.

Interesting fact: his son, Carlos Páez Rodríguez, was one of the 16 survivors of the 1972 Andes plane crash with an Uruguayan soccer team.

Ok. I know what you’re thinking. Why does this animal have a carrot in its mouth? Well, that’s not a carrot, it’s his ORANGE TEETH!! Allegedly they are orange due to oxidized enamel. The other strange fact is its name. This animal is a Nutria, which comes from the Spanish word for otter as it is semi-aquatic. They are native to South America, but were introduced to North America during the fur trade. We even have them here in Oregon.

The Church of Paria. This abandoned church was actually never completed. It is not completely known why, but the theories are the intervention of WWI, the church refusing to consecrate it due to occult and Masonic symbols, and mysteries surrounding the area. Whatever the reason, it is a sight to behold.
