There’s something so special about slow time spent together before everything changes ❤️

I was their birth photographer and doula, and we spent the afternoon in their home for their final prenatal appointment and this maternity session - just the two of them, the sweetest dog, and all the quiet excitement of baby coming soon! The light was perfect, they looked stunning, and the whole session felt so easy and full of love.

We ended sitting across from each other talking through birth plans and hopes for labor while I snapped the final photos in between conversations! Those moments remind me this work is about so much more than photos 🫶🏻

One of my favorite things about birth center care is how baby’s newborn assessment is done right there on the bed next to mom (usually while she’s eating a meal). No rushing away to the other side of the room at the one-hour mark, and no bright warmer lights, just gentle care within reach of both parents.

And goodness, midwives just carry this quiet strength and calm confidence while they work. It’s always so beautiful to witness 🫶🏻

Skin-to-skin snuggles with Dad ❤️

I like to suggest that Dad wear a zip-up hoodie or a button-up shirt to make this easier! Though I’ve seen plenty of dads either squish baby under their shirt or take their shirt off altogether 😂 Those first warm snuggles are so sweet and help to regulate baby’s breathing, heart rate, and temperature (and dad’s, too)!

Those first hours of breastfeeding are about so much more than feeding baby…

The closeness, warmth, smell, and skin-to-skin contact all help baby regulate their temperature, breathing, and heart rate while also helping encourage milk production and bonding for mom, too ❤️

And in the hospital room glow, mesh underwear and exhaustion included, it can all feel so gentle and beautiful 🫶🏻

Here baby is surrounded by the tools that helped welcome and care for this new tiny life - the little scale and sling, measuring tape, thermometer, charted stats, and stethoscope.

At The Natural BirthHouse, the newborn assessment is done right on the bed where parents are resting and within arms reach to comfort their baby. As soon as the assessment is over, the midwife gathers all the things she used for this sweet photo ❤️

Each of these photos were taken minutes apart as she was laboring, and they show the combination of joy and focus.

The movies/tv show birth so wrong - with screaming, sweating women full of frustration and tension and fear. Birth does not look like that, or if there are moments of those things they typically do not last long as that is riiiiiight at the end as baby is coming into this world!

I believe the portrayal of birth on tv does a disservice to families because it gives them something to fear from day one…when truly, birth can be filled with SO many other beautiful emotions, and the work of all of it can be enveloped in peace 🫶🏻

I get to witness and capture motherhood in its rawest, truest, and most beautiful forms - and truly, that honor is never lost on me!

The sweet moments I see and photograph so often make me think of my incredible Mom, and how much I miss her. Mothers are such a gift of the purest love, and I’m thankful to see that so frequently in my life ❤️
