In 1777, wartime shortages hit Boston hard. British blockades disrupted imports, making everyday goods like coffee and sugar scarce and expensive. Merchants suspected of hoarding these items quickly became targets of public anger, especially as families struggled to secure basic supplies.
That year, a crowd of more than 100 women marched to the warehouse of a wealthy merchant believed to be stockpiling coffee. When he refused to hand over the keys, accounts describe the women physically confronting him and forcing their way inside. Once the doors were opened, they loaded carts with coffee and left, taking only what they believed was being unfairly withheld from the community.
The incident was part of a broader pattern known as food riots, which were often led by women in the 18th century. These actions were not random violence but moral protests, rooted in the belief that essential goods should be sold at fair prices during times of crisis. The Boston coffee riot stands as a reminder that ordinary people, especially women, played an active role in enforcing economic justice during the American Revolution.
