Kea are very curious, clever and cheeky alpine parrots. They are master problem solvers — including using tools to get what they want. (Scientists have had to redesign rodent traps because the kea would use sticks to release the trap and steal the egg bait!)

The two kea in the video have made the Luxmore Hut area of the Kepler Track their territory. No shoes are allowed in the hut, but there is a mudroom inside with shelves for your boots. This of course protects them from the elements, but also from kea theft!

Since it was going to be a long day of alpine hiking I decided not to bring my large (and heavy) wildlife lens. Turns out I didn’t need it. The kea came right up to me and I was able to get some pretty surprising shots with my landscape lens.

After spending all night at a hide with almost no visitors, I was exhausted and packing up my camera gear when this group of elephants showed up for a drink. They stayed for just a few minutes. Luckily I had a camera handy and fired off a few shots before they departed.

It’s not hard to see why these birds are called bee-eaters. They are fast little birds that are fun to watch and very challenging to photograph mid-air.

You can find the African jacana in the grasses along the Chobe River, but they also love to hunt for bugs in lily ponds. Since it was getting close to the end of the dry season not many lilies were left, but we were happy to find a small patch where this bird was looking for breakfast. If you zoom in you can see a bug on one of the petals.
