Wet Leaves on Wood; Fern and Fungus
—————————————————————
I made another trip to the redwoods 2 weekends ago and it was as beautiful as ever - especially since there were so many flowers in bloom! I haven’t been able to edit those photos yet though, so here’s a couple of shots from last year while I finish bringing out the tones in these leaves…

Dolomiti Vista
—————————————————————
Here’s a spectacularly high-res panorama from the Dolomites. Though impossible to tell here, I can zoom into the hills to make out the details on individual huts, as well as people on the hillside to the lower left of frame. This is just one of many beautiful views and I were treated to during a day of beautiful skies.
—————————————————————
Cole and I spent a good amount of time here watching the cloud shadows drift over the landscape and waiting for the right moment to take a photo. This memory is vividly etched into my mind and looking at this image has me longing to return.

Sunrise above Schlernhaus
—————————————————————
Here’s an image from our first proper morning in the Dolomites back in August. We got up at 6am and headed to a peak for sunrise, where we were met with a great view. The air was cool and calm, the sky was clear, and the color of the grass in the early morning light was beautiful and vibrant! and I both got some nice pictures of this beautiful golden grass and then headed back to the hut to enjoy a warm breakfast.

View from Mars
——
Dolomites, Day 5
Day 1: 8.7 miles, 2300 feet elevation
—————————————————————
We began day 5 in a very rocky landscape, high up on a mountain, near the peaks. The trail started strong, with a traverse over a steep pass, which required us to scramble up rock and scree. We ended up accidentally taking an alternate route after losing the main trail, but reached the top, seen here, which gave us our first glimpse of the canyon we would be hiking through. From this vantage point the landscape looked rocky, a bit barren, and almost otherworldly. If not for the cloud in the sky, this picture would look like it was taken on another planet.
—————————————————————
We were treated to beautiful views and nice clouds for a while as we descended, but we eventually had to start climbing again. The trail wound over grassy slopes as it took us higher and higher, eventually forcing us over another steep pass, which included a section where we had to climb a ladder that was bolted into the rock. It was a long, hard climb and by the time it was over, I was tired and hungry and in a real hurry to get to the next rifugio.
—————————————————————
When we finally arrived, we enjoyed a large and tasty lunch - our last taste of this wonderful mountain food. The rest of the trail was just a quick hike to a gondola, which took us down into town and completed our lengthy and unforgettable trek.

Sasso Piatto at Sunrise
——
Dolomites, Day 4
8.3 miles, 2900 feet elevation
—————————————————————
This is the only photo I took on day 4. It was captured in the morning before we left Rifugio Des Alpes and began the toughest day of the trip. Cole’s English lady friend that he met in Portugal, Aseel, had arrived the night before and she was a welcome companion over the next 2 days. We had many good conversations about a variety of topics. Always fun to hear perspectives from other countries.
—————————————————————
This hike began on a mountain, descended into a valley, and then began a steep climb up another mountain. I don’t know why or how, but I was flying up that mountain. The trail pretty much went straight up as directly as possible and we ended up climbing about 2000ft over 2-3 miles in about an hour and 15 minutes, which was quite fast. When we reached the top, I was extremely tired and hungry and relieved to arrive at the next rifugio where I enjoyed an aperol spritz with some sausage, sauerkraut, potatoes and cheesecake. The Italians really know how to live.

Evening at Schlernhaus
——
Dolomites, Day 1
8.4 miles, 2800 feet elevation

When and I arrived in Val Gardena, we were both feeling a little apprehensive about the 5 day trip we were about to embark on. We had to pull our suitcases up a hill from the bus stop and I remember feeling a little winded and weak in the legs - not a good sign the night before a 40 mile hike. We had just traveled 11 hours, having started In Krakow, and took 2 flights, a bus, a train, and another bus to get here, our destination among the mountains.
—————————————————————
As the following day unfolded, our concerns subsided and although it was a steep climb, it was totally manageable. We stopped for lunch at a little hut and had our first taste of the surprisingly fine dining that can be found at the top of the Italian Alps - that’s not a joke. Some of the very best food I have had in Italy was in the mountain rifugios. I enjoyed a bread and cheese platter with elderflower sparkling water. Elderflower water is bomb. Try it.

Fall Colors Reflecting off a Beaver Pond
—————————————————————
This photo was taken last month on a beautiful Sunday in one of the best fall color locations in California. The day started off frigidly cold when and I got up at 7am and made our way down to the lake to watch the morning light wash over the hills. Then it ended with a nice sunset looking down the backside of Yosemite Valley with .100. In the hours between, we saw vibrant Aspens and blue lakes set against mountain backdrops. It was a great day.
—————————————————————
I was drawn to this scene by the colorful reflections in the still water, contrasted with the blue mountains in the background. To simplify the image and give it a more graphic feel, I used a long focal length to compotes the scene. Editing this one was also fun. I was initially having a hard time figuring out why the contrast was wonky and was struggling to fix it. But after a few hours last Saturday playing with masks and level curves, I am pleased with the results.

Yellow Cottonwood, Sierra Backdrop
—————————————————————
Two weeks ago, I made my way to the mountains for Mother Nature’s brilliant annual display of color. It was a quick trip but well worth the effort! I was treated to clear skies, pristine water, a beautiful morning, spectacular fall colors, and a view of Half Dome.
—————————————————————
This day started with breakfast burritos in camp and ended with a hazy sunset and too much food at a brewery in town (did we really need 15 sauces??). We also ate some s’mores and fought off the cold by huddling around the fire and watching for shooting stars. Shout out to for seeing the Milky Way for the first time.
—————————————————————
This is my favorite photo from the trip, taken on the first day. The composition is simple but effective and I like the contrast between the yellow and blue colors. I was trying to find an angle where I could totally hide the sky and just have the blue-toned mountain as a backdrop but I couldn’t get in the right position. This turned out to be a good thing because I think this photo works better with the sky included.
