Manhattanhenge

Today is the day to get this full sun shot. Yesterday was the half sun shot.

I captured this 3 years ago. I arrived to the Tudor city bridge at 1pm. There were already 25-30 people set up and waiting. Over the next 7+ hours I stood and watched the crowd much larger. No bathroom breaks, and certainly nothing to drink. Haha.

During this time you get to talking to a lot of people around you, make some new friends. Kind of hard not to since things get pretty close together. Haha. Then Neil DeGrasse Tyson shows up. Made the whole standing there for 7+ absolutely worth it.

This photo here, was captured during a time where we had a lot of wildlife haze which helped give it this look.

Tomorrow is if you’re planning on getting that shot. Make sure you arrive early. I showed up at 1pm and there was already 25 people set up. Some as early as 7 am.

You can see the build up here. If you’re lucky enough you’ll run in to Neil deGrasse Tyson like I did. He showed me his first photo of Manhattanhenge.

It’s a long day if you want to set up for what some call the perfect shot. You do see thousands of people just walk into the middle of the street to catch a quick photo too.

Thank you Neil for some of these photos you captured of me and Dr. Tyson.

Are you ready for Manhattanhenge?

Did you know? Twice a year - around May 28-29, and again around July 11-12 - people in New York City look for . That's when the aligns perfectly on east-west oriented streets in Manhattan. So cool! In 2026, the 1st set of Manhattanhenge dates fall on May 28 (half sun) and May 29 (full sun). And the second set of dates occur on July 11 and 12. 🌇

All gave some, some gave their all.

I’m lucky, I grew up with a grandfather who served and came back home.

There were many people that served and never made it home. That is what Memorial Day is about. Don’t forget that.

My friend Niles and I got together yesterday to try some different lighting techniques. Since it has not stopped raining all weekend.

Niles is a fan, so I decided to pull out the blue (CTB) and orange (CTO) gels to add some NY Knicks colors to his photos.

While I have three speed lights, I only have two receivers for them (I need to get a third), so trying to get orange, blue, and a standard white flash to light everything up evenly became a trick. On the right side of these photos you can see the bottom half is blue while the top half is white. This was a happy accident. I put the blue gel in the strip box and it did not cover up the entire opening, so it gave me blue on the bottom and white on top. I perfectly nailed the blue, orange, and white of the NY Knicks colors. HA!

I am sure I will forget about this technique that I stumbled upon, but for now, I think it works. What do you think?

Happy 143rd Birthday to the Brooklyn Bridge.

Construction: The bridge took 14 years to build, with construction officially beginning in 1870.

Designers: It was designed by John A. Roebling, engineered by his son Washington Roebling, and supervised for over a decade by Washington's wife, Emily Warren Roebling.

Historical Significance: When it opened, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world and the first fixed crossing over the East River connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn.

As we approach Memorial Day Weekend, there are a lot of things that we think about. For some of us in NY State, we think about the air show that happens on Long Island every year on this weekend.

However, not this weekend this year. As out country is getting ready to celebrate its 250th birthday of independence, the Long Island air show has been moved to the July 4th weekend. With that being said, I will not be there this year.

So for now, I will repost some of my photos from last years Memorial Day air show.
