Sometimes your just need a relaxing morning dip. We witnessed this impressive boar grizzly swim a river yesterday morning on tour. This Bear has been living in the Tetons for the past couple months and has been fairly visible, he is one of the largest bears I have ever seen in Grand Teton. 🐻

BABY ANIMALS! I filmed these new born baby bighorns about a week ago in Yellowstone, before the flooding. We saw their mothers about 24 hours earlier with no young and discovered, the next day, they had both given birth to these two lambs probably during the cover of darkness. The mothers will shelter these little ones as they grow on the safety of cliffs and ledges, a precarious perch but relatively safe from flat country predators.

Steamboat Geyser is the Worlds largest active geyser, with record eruptions shooting water more than 300 feet into the air. The immense volume of water has killed and destroyed the trees surrounding this powerful thermal feature, snapping pine trees like twigs. Unlike some of the more popular geysers in Yellowstone, Steamboat is completely unpredictable and years often pass between eruptions. I never counted on seeing this wonder of Yellowstone but this May I got lucky. Here are some photos showing the end of the “water phase” and the beginning of the “steam phase” from an overlook during a lucky tour in Yellowstone.

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem has one of the worlds most southerly breeding populations of common loon. This small population is extremely hard to observe during the summer months. However, during migration many other individuals from other populations migrate through the ecosystem. This makes seeing loons during the spring and fall months much easier. Its best to photograph and view these migrating birds and to leave the residential pairs alone, as loons are incredibly sensitive to disturbance during the nesting season. Human caused disturbance is believed to be one of the leading causes for loon decline in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. I filmed these loons using my attacked to a spotting scope.

Canada jays… we often think of large mammalian carnivores and eagles as the primary consumers of meat in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem but a plethora of smaller animals will readily feed from carcasses as well including this gray jay. These fluffy birds are well known for flying off with pieces of flesh to later store in trees for winter. A winning survival strategy.

This is a great egret, one of the largest and most widespread species of herons on earth.
Herons are fascinating to me because they not only embody the beauty of birds that draw so many of us into the field with binoculars, they are also voracious carnivores.
A quick internet search will show just how predatory these birds are, with pictures of great blue herons eating rabbits, ducks, and other vertebrates most people would assume are too large for them to tackle.
They also hunt in a variety of habitats, with many being terrestrial stalkers. But what ever the habitat they choose to seek out victims, their efficiency cannot be understated. Most ambush predators still have to exert huge amounts of energy to chase down their targets but not the heron. It’s seems they have perfected the art of ambush hunting.
