10 interesting facts about Sullivan County and its arts scene as it currently exists:

1. The 1969 Woodstock Festival didn’t actually take place in Woodstock—it was held in Bethel, Sullivan County, drawing around 500,000 people and permanently tying the region to counterculture, music, and experimental art.

2. The Woodstock site is now home to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a major cultural hub that hosts concerts, exhibitions, and educational programming, continuing the creative legacy.

3. Sullivan County’s “Borscht Belt” era made it a training ground for legendary comedians like Mel Brooks and Milton Berle, shaping American performance and comedic art.

4. When the resort industry declined, the county shifted toward arts and culture as a form of economic and cultural revitalization.

5. Many galleries and creative spaces exist in converted barns, schoolhouses, and small storefronts, blending rural character with contemporary art.

6. The region has a strong experimental theater presence, with companies focusing on avant-garde and nontraditional performance styles.

7. Organizations like the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance provide grants, exhibitions, and festivals, supporting working artists in the area.

8. Local art programming embraces a wide range of mediums, including photography, film, mixed media, and digital work.

9. Art is integrated into everyday life—appearing in cafés, markets, pop-ups, and public spaces, not just formal galleries.

10. Sullivan County uniquely combines historic cultural significance (Woodstock, Borscht Belt) with an active, grassroots contemporary art scene.

My goal: I want to create an artistic incubator that focuses on at-risk analog art skills. Starting with a community dark room, but ultimately becoming a space that offers classes on analog/ Hands-On artistic pursuits from creative writing ( by hand ) to visual art, to even artisan cooking skills. A space to explore creatively, socialize, collaborate and brainstorm, I want to provide gallery space, invite guest artists and have artist in residence opportunities, scholarships and so much more!
